The EveryWoman Book Club, sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center, will discuss Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, July 24, noon, The Globe Restaurant. In Water for Elephants, 90-year-old Jacob Jankowski recounts his life and experiences with the Benzini Brothers Circus during the Depression. The author intersperses Jacob’s memories with his present day life in a nursing home as he anticipates seeing a circus that has arrived in town. Water for Elephants is a New York Times No. 1 Best Seller and winner of the 2007 Book Sense Book of the Year Award. Information: 348-5040, wrc.ua.edu/.

Workshop for New Graduate Teaching Assistants
UA’s 22nd annual workshop for new GTAs is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, Aug. 14-15, Bryant Conference Center. The workshop will feature presentations by experts in their fields, with topics on the use of proven strategies for effective classroom teaching, technology, curriculum design and implementation, and student support. New temporary and part-time faculty members also are invited to attend. Rocky Beach by Deborah Hughes‘Diverse Palettes’
The Tuscaloosa University Women Painters Annual Show, titled “Diverse Palettes,” will be on display July 3-31 at the Ferguson Center Art Gallery. An artist reception will be held Thursday, July 31, 6-8 p.m. Participating members: Phyllis Brown, Jo Chism, Takako Fujiwara, Deborah Hughes, Dianna Francko, Ann Stickney, Tana Thomas, Dottye Lind, Tekla Rex, and Sharon Long.

10th Annual Hughes Undergraduate Research Posters
Twelve undergraduate researchers working with faculty mentors in biology, microbiology, chemistry, and biodiversity will present their results in the 10th Annual Hughes Undergraduate Research Intern Poster Session, July 25, noon, main lobby of the biology building. This year’s program is supported by funds from the College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of Academic Affairs, and the 2002 Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Science Program grant to UA.
