ScaleBack Proves Successful

The Office of Health Promotion and Wellness partnered with the Department of Public Health to bring the statewide ScaleBack Alabama program to campus and put their own spin on the program by calling it Strive to ScaleBack. A total of 372 faculty and staff signed up to participate in Strive to ScaleBack on campus, and by the end of the 10-week program University employees had lost a total of 1,596 pounds.

Strive to ScaleBack participants competed in teams of four and weighed-in weekly as a team during the program that ran from Jan. 14 to March 14. Each team member was challenged to lose 10 pounds for a total weight loss of 40 pounds by each team. The Office of Health Promotion and Wellness staff encouraged all participants to lose the goal weight of 10 pounds by offering weekly weigh-ins across campus and weekly classes during the lunch hour on losing weight, healthy cooking and eating, and increasing activity.

Aside from becoming healthier and slimmer, Strive to ScaleBack participants had a few additional incentives to work towards their weight loss goals. Teams who participated and who met the 40-pound weight loss goal automatically got entered into a statewide drawing for $4000. The Office of Health Promotion and Wellness also held a $200 drawing for teams who lost 20 pounds or more. The Trim Setters team — Vicky Wyatt, Shelia Malone, Renee Pate, and Amanda Burroughs — won this prize.
