UA Ranks 11th in Enrollment of National Merit Scholars

UA’s vision of recruiting the “best and brightest” students is clearly becoming a reality as UA ranks 11th in the nation among public universities in the enrollment of National Merit Scholars for 2006-2007, and 29th among all universities. The rankings, based on the National Merit Scholarship Corp.’s newly-released 2005-2006 annual report, place UA among the top 8 percent nationally among the 387 colleges and universities that enrolled one or more National Merit Scholars. There are nearly 2,500 four-year public and private colleges and universities in the United States.

“When we laid out our vision for the future there were some who questioned whether a major public university could rapidly transform itself into one of the leading public universities in the country. This fall we answered that question with 85 National Merit Scholars, a freshman class of 749 men and women who had high school GPA’s of 4.0 or higher, and with a freshman class that averaged in the top 18 percent nationwide in the ACT,” said President Robert E. Witt during a reception honoring those students held recently at The Zone at Bryant Denny Stadium.
