"Halter Garden Gown" from the Waistline exhibit
  • Jil Weinstock: Waistline
Artist Jil Weinstock creates works that appear minimal, but only at first glance. The enchanted circles and ovals of rubber encase the past, a memorialized past. Women’s dresses and nightgowns are transformed, imitating the vanity mirror. The viewer is left to investigate the implied lives depicted in these conceptual shrines, while other works composed of exposed zippers serve as provocative color studies. Weinstock teaches at the School of Visual Arts, New York. Weinstock will lecture on her work Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. in 205 Smith Hall. A reception will be held Nov. 2, 6-8 p.m. in the gallery. The exhibition is made possible by Charles Cowles Gallery, New York, NY. The gallery is centrally located at 103 Garland Hall. This exhibit will run Oct. 19-Nov. 19. For further information, contact Vicki Rial, Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, at 348-1891 or vrial@art.as.ua.edu.

Events

The Fall Faculty-Staff Meeting will be Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 1:30 p.m. in the Rast Room at the Bryant Conference Center. All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.

Moral Forum Tournament

The Center for Ethics & Social Responsibility at UA will host the Second Annual Moral Forum Tournament Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Ferguson Theater. Two exemplary pairs of students from this semester’s UH 101: Moral Forum course will debate in the final round of the tournament on the topic “Organ Selling: The Role of a Moral and Just Society.” The debate addresses the issue of whether the United States should permit the sale of human organs so as to allow monetary compensation for cadaveric organs as well as organs from the living (such as kidneys) that do not unduly jeopardize the donor’s health. Congressman Artur Davis will be at the event to award $15,000 in scholarships. Moral Forum was designed to help UA students develop the skills to evaluate and respond to moral claims and engage in moral discourse. Striving to foster both open-mindedness and conviction, Moral Forum seeks to help students distinguish between making reasoned judgments about the moral legitimacy of views as opposed to being intolerant or disrespectful toward individuals or cultural groups. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments and breakout discussions, co-sponsored by Creative Campus, will follow the debate. For more information on Moral Forum and the work of the Center for Ethics & Social Responsibility, contact Casey Condra at 348-6490 or ccondra@aalan.ua.edu.

A still from the movie Farewell My Concubine

China in Transition Lecture and Film Series
The UA department of history is presenting “China in Transition,” a lecture and film series. Dr. Anthony Clark, UA assistant professor of Chinese history, will provide introductory remarks before each of the four films. Three of the films are rare and all have English subtitles. All films will be shown at 7 p.m. in 252 ten Hoor Hall. Monday, Oct. 16 – “The Legend of Red Lantern” (1970) is one of the so-called ‘eight model plays’ of the Cultural Revolution. This film is patently anti-foreign – specifically, anti- Japanese. The story recounts the history of a young woman who becomes a heroic revolutionary, risking life to serve the motherland, China. The film draws on traditional Chinese opera to promote the ideals of the Maoist Cultural Revolution. Monday, Oct. 23 – “Farewell My Concubine” (1993) recounts the lives of two men within the turbulent landscape of the Cultural Revolution during the mid-20th century. The director, Chen Kaige, employs issues of love, gender, sexuality and cultural change to present a vivid commentary on one of China’s most dramatic upheavals. This is a deeply provocative film, hailed by many critics as one of China’s most important movies. For more information, contact Dr. Anthony Clark at 348-1858, or at aclark1@ua.edu.
