AnnouncementsEmployee/Family Medical Leave Policy Revised The former Employee/ Family Medical Leave Policy has been revised effective Feb. 1. The title of the policy has been changed from Employee/ Family Medical Leave Policy to Family and Medical Leave Policy. The only other change in the revised policy regards the duration of the leave itself. The duration of all family and medical leaves that begin on or after Feb. 1 will be 12 weeks. The Department of Human Resources continues to revise its policies to be more reflective of the intent of the federal laws that govern a number of UA policies. The changes to the former Employee/Family Medical Leave policy make it more consistent with the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, which is administered by the U.S. Department of Labor. The revised policy is located online at http://hr.ua. edu/empl_rel/policy-manual in the Human Resources Policy Manual. Employees who do not have a computer should ask a supervisor to print out a copy for them. Questions regarding the revised policy should be directed to the Benefits Office at 348-7732. University Telecommunications Encouraging Campus to use Online BellSouth Directory UA Telecommunications is encouraging the campus to use the online BellSouth telephone directory instead of the printed phonebooks. In an environmental effort to reduce the number of printed BellSouth directories, BellSouth is offering its directories for Tuscaloosa and other cities throughout the Southeast online. The Web site is www.realpageslive.com. A limited number of printed BellSouth directories are available to departments upon request. To request a copy, please send an e-mail to Rhonda Doty at Rdoty@bama. ua.edu with the following information: name, department, physical address and number of directories requested. Telecommunication will then deliver the directories to the requesting department. Retirees Association Seeking New Members UA employees who expect to retire within five years are urged to join The University of Alabama Retirees Association (TUARA). This group was formed in 2004 to demonstrate grassroots interest and involvement in issues affecting higher education employees. Current membership is approaching 600. Dr. William Stewart, former chair of political science, is president of the organization. As its primary focus this legislative session, TUARA has joined efforts with the Alabama Education Retirees Association to lobby for an increase in income for retirees. Membership dues are $20 per year for an individual or for a couple. Those interested in joining TUARA may request a membership application by sending an e-mail to Martha Rogers, TUARA vice-president, at mrogers37@bellsouth.net or by calling 556-2934. University Accepting Applications for Next Leadership Academy Two cohorts of faculty and staff have now participated in the University’s Leadership Academy that was initiated in 2002 by President Robert Witt. The University is now accepting applications from faculty and staff to participate in the third cohort, which will run from the fall of 2006 through the spring of 2008. The purpose of the Leadership Academy is to provide faculty, staff, and administrators with a professional development program to develop leadership skills. Participants will receive assessment feedback using the Leadership Practices Inventory and will be assigned a new staff or faculty member to mentor. The Leadership Academy is open to a wide variety of people from across the campus community. Faculty who are interested in improving their leadership skills and possibly becoming department chairs, chairs who are interested in becoming deans, staff who are interested in becoming directors, and directors who are interested in executive positions are all encouraged to apply.
