Alabama Museum of Natural History, Smith Hall, 348-7550

  • Harper Photo Exhibit and Symposium
    “Botanical Bonanza: Photographs by Roland Harper” will be on display through March 17. The exhibit showcases 22 rare photographs of Alabama plants and landscapes taken by Roland McMillan Harper between 1911 and 1951. Harper (1878-1966) served as botanist and phytogeographer for the Alabama Geological Survey from 1905 until his death. Although not a member of the UA faculty, generations of students and scientists called upon Harper in his office located at the Geological Survey in Smith Hall on the University campus. Operating hours for UA’s Museum of Natural History are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children and retirees.

    An exhibition of 19th and 20th century photographs of African-American subjects selected from the Wade Hall Photographs Collection, part of the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library’s collections. This exhibit will run Feb. 1 through March 17. Admission is free. This exhibition is held in conjunction with UA’s campuswide celebration of African-American Heritage Month.

 

  • Made By Hand: An Exhibition of Handmade Books & Ephemera from some of the nation’s finest University Book Arts Programs
    An exhibition of handmade books and artists’ books from 20 institutions across the United States. This exhibit is sponsored by the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library/MFA Program in the Book Arts, School of Library and Information Studies. This exhibit will run through Feb. 17. Admission is free.

 

  • book coverTo Kill a Mockingbird: An exhibit of books, photographs, and other materials relating to Harper Lee’s legendary novel.
    The exhibition includes photographs from Lee’s days as a UA student, along with several editions of her stellar work, which are housed in the Alabama Collection in the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library. This exhibit will run through March 17. Admission is free.

  • Department of Art Faculty Exhibition 2006
    This annual exhibition features works of art created by the current studio faculty and emeritus faculty members of the UA Department of Art. Works include photography, sculpture, printmaking, painting, drawing and ceramics and range from the contemporary to the figurative to the design-based. The exhibit runs through Feb. 26.

‘Love and Duty: Amelia and Josiah Gorgas and Their Family’

Sarah Wiggins will discuss her work, “Love and Duty: Amelia and Josiah Gorgas and Their Family,” Feb. 13 at 5:10 p.m. at the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library, second Floor Mary Harmon Bryant Hall. She also will sign copies of her book. Admission is free. The Gorgas Family Papers are part of the W.S. Book Talk and Signing with Rick Bragg

Rick BraggUniversity Libraries continues its spring 2006 Book Talks series with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Rick Bragg Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. in Gorgas Library, second floor. Bragg, who joined the UA communications faculty during fall 2005, has worked as a reporter for the Anniston Star, the Birmingham News, the St. Petersburg Times, the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1996 in feature writing for his stories about contemporary America. Bragg is author of the critically acclaimed and best-selling “It’s All Over but the Shoutin’” (New York: Pantheon Books, 1997), a memoir that recounts his days growing up poor in rural Alabama. String Quartet Concert

The American String Quartet will perform at 4 p.m. Feb 19 in the Concert Hall of the Moody Music Building. The String Quartet Society of Tuscaloosa offers the program with sponsorship by Gene Beatty Dean and the Gloria Narramore Moody Foundation. The concert will feature music by Mozart, Brahms and Ravel. Tickets for the concert are $15 and can be purchased at the door. Admission is free for persons 18 and under and for all students with valid student identification cards. Stephen HoughPiano Soloist Joins TSO for Valentine’s Performance

The Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra will perform “A Symphonic Valentine” Feb. 13 in the Moody Music Building at 7:30 p.m. under the baton of maestro Shinik Hahm. Pianist Stephen Hough will be featured on the concerto. Tickets are $5-35 and are available from the TSO office or the box office the day of the concert. The performance is sponsored by Alabama Power.

The 11 a.m. matinee, sponsored by University Mall and West Alabama Neurosurgery & Spine, PC, again will be available to patrons at reduced prices of $5 for adults and $2 for children. For more information call 752- 5515 or go to www.tsoonline.org for ticket information.
