On the Job Injuries Should be ReportedBy Janie Fowler, Safety Coordinator All on the job injuries (OJI’s) should be reported to the department or supervisor immediately and an OJI form completed and forwarded to risk management within 48 hours following the incident. Risk management must be contacted immediately to assure approval of workers’ compensation. If an injury occurs after hours, risk management should be contacted the following workday. Employees with an OJI that requires medical attention must go to University Medical Center (UMC) during working hours. If UMC is closed, the injured employee is to go to DCH Regional Medical Facility in Tuscaloosa. It is in the employee’s best interest to seek medical treatment immediately to prevent further injury or infection. For an OJI, the facilities at UMC are available for limited out-patient emergency care at no cost to the employee. Employees are required to use UMC except for extensive or major injuries which require a greater degree of care than UMC can provide. For extensive or major injuries, the employee must go to DCH. If an employee is out of town on UA business and is injured, seek medical attention at the closest medical facility and notify risk management as soon as possible. Students injured on campus and requiring medical treatment should complete a Student Injury Report. A copy of this form may be printed from the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Web page at www.bama.ua.edu/~ehs or obtained from Russell Student Health Center. On the job injuries are reviewed by EHS to determine all facts relating to incident. Contact is made with the employee or supervisor to assure unsafe conditions are corrected or unsafe acts are addressed. A memo is normally generated to the supervisor detailing what happened and lists all previous OJI’s by the employee. The Safety Coordinator makes recommendations for corrective action which may include training, counseling, written disciplinary action including termination if safety procedures were not followed. Copies of this memo are distributed to supervisors, deans, directors, department heads and vice presidents. Questions concerning on the job injury reporting and injury treatment should be addressed to risk management at 348-4535 or box 870119. Harbor Program Successful, Available to New ParticipantsThe Women’s Resource Center is seeing great success with its Harbor program. Started during spring 2005, Harbor now has more than 200 participants and remains available for new trainees. “We are thrilled that the Harbor placards can now be seen all over campus,” said Project Coordinator Adam Miller. “From the UA Rec Center to academic buildings to residence halls, students, faculty, and staff are seeing the Harbor placards and now know that if they ever need help, there will be someone around them who can offer assistance.” The purpose of Harbor is to create a network of safe places all over campus where victims of sexual assault and domestic violence can go to receive assistance. Through Harbor training, faculty and staff gain insight and sensitivity to the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault. Further, participants are made aware of the resources available to victims so they can pass this information along to all who need it. Harbor trainings last about 90 minutes and can be incorporated into a single staff meeting or broken into components to accommodate participant’s schedules, Miller said. Those who complete the program are given an identifying placard to display in their offices, as well as a certificate of completion. Harbor is a program of the Campus Violence Task Force, made up of representatives from the UA Police, Athletics, Judicial Affairs, Housing and Residential Communities, Black Faculty and Staff Association and more. Funding is provided through the Department of Justice’s Grant to Reduce Violence Against Women on Campus. For more information or to schedule a Harbor training, call Adam Miller at 348-5040.
