Six Leaders to be Inducted into C&IS Hall of Fame

Six distinguished journalists and community leaders who worked to advance the democratic arts in diverse ways will be inducted into the UA College of Communication and Information Sciences’ Hall of Fame Oct. 13. The induction ceremonies will be at the NorthRiver Yacht Club.

Established by the C&IS Board of Visitors, the Communication Hall of Fame was created in 1998 to honor, preserve and perpetuate the names and accomplishments of civic and communication personalities who have brought lasting fame to the state of Alabama. This year marks the eighth class of inductees into the Hall of Fame. Inductees are Albert P. Brewer (1935- ), Ronald B. Casey (1951-2000), Thomas E. Corts (1941- ), Jack Edwards (1928- ), Wayne Flynt (1940- ) and H. Bailey Thomson (1949-2003).

“Several years ago the college adopted ‘advancing the democratic arts’ as its mantra,” said Dr. E. Culpepper Clark, dean of the College of Communication and Information Sciences. “Certainly none in Alabama have done more to promote democratic reform than have the members of this class.”

The Communication Hall of Fame Gallery is located in the rotunda of Reese Phifer Hall on the UA campus.

UA Physics Department Sponsors Football Events

The department of physics and astronomy will have a tent on the Quad before two home football games in celebration of the World Year of Physics 2005.

The tent will be part of Kickoff on the Quad events for both the UA vs. Tennessee game on Oct. 22 and the UA vs. Utah State game on Oct. 29. Demonstrations will include experiments that illustrate contemporary physics concepts developed by the UA physics faculty.

Faculty members will be coordinating activities with the assistance of members from the local chapter of the Society of Physics Students. Visitors who participate in the experiments will receive free tops and yo-yos, items which illustrate key physics concepts, said Dr. Gary J. Mankey, UA professor of physics.
