Healthful Hints

By John Kasberg, UA Risk Analyst

UA employees recently received a memo from the UA risk analyst office. A reminder from that memo follows:

The University is requesting that each employee enrolled in the University’s self-insured Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama group health plan answer two brief survey questions. A BC/BS of Alabama form regarding any other health insurance coverage(s) you and/or your spouse and dependents may have was attached. The information will help the University keep the cost of health care insurance down.

The University needs this information to help BC/BS of Alabama coordinate the health insurance benefits of other group health plans with the University’s health plan. This coordination of benefits (COB) helps BC/BS of Alabama prevent duplicate claims payments by our group health plan and may save you and the University money. If you are also covered by another health plan, the other plan may pay all or part of your UA health plan co-pays and deductibles. All the information you provide to us will be kept confidential.

It is not too late to help in this effort. Employees who have not returned that form may call the risk analyst office at 348-3312 for the form and memo. The survey answers we receive will also help determine whether some type of future monetary incentives can be offered to members of UA’s employee health plan who are eligible for, or who are covered by, other health plans.

Members Can Check ACU Visa Card Online, 24/7

If you have wondered where your Visa card balance stood during a month or how you’ve used the card the most, there’s a way Alabama Credit Union members can access up-to-themoment information about their ACU Visa card through a secure server website. The account may be checked anytime of day or night, from anywhere in the world. Users can also run all kinds of reports, including budgeting information, full expense reports, expense categories, the most expensive purchases, and your top 10 merchants. Users can check current account information and the account’s history.

The Alabama Credit Union has partnered with Certegy, a third party contractor, to provide this service to members. To find out about the level of security or other information, users may call a customer service representative of Certegy at 1-866-604-0380 or at the ACU, Benson Bolling, director of card services at 348-5944.

Here’s how to set up your personalized account information: www.ezcardinfo.com. The home page is a fairly unadorned, bare-bones site. Click on “Enroll for Online Services” in the top left to begin the process. Fill out the information as required. You’ll need to give a user ID and password. Remember to put these in a safe place.

There are certain guidelines to follow, which will be familiar to computer users: no dashes, no periods, no parentheses, etc. The company is in the process of clarifying these guidelines, but whatever the changes, current users accounts will not be affected.

UA Engineering Students Develop Toys For Rise Center

Two little girls in toy car with lady to the leftUA senior mechanical engineering students have designed and built ride-on toys for children who have motor skill limitations and attend the RISE Program at the Stallings Center. Besides giving the children toys to ride, the toys will provide these children with experience in driving electronic devices and help prepare them for electric wheelchairs sooner.

The mechanical engineering design class divided into teams to produce four toys for children ranging from ages 2 to 6. The toys are very similar in form to the Fisher-Price® Power Wheels® toys. Some of the teams bought Power Wheels toys and modified them to suit the needs of the project. The teams added electronic speed control, electronic steering and safety cut-off switches in the event an obstruction is hit.
