UA Sports Teams Rank High in APRs
The high-ranking teams include men's basketball and baseball; and women's cross country, indoor and outdoor track, softball and volleyball. The APR is an NCAA initiative to focus on the academic side of college athletics, and it's a first-of-its-kind method of measuring academic performance for the NCAA. A perfect score is 1,000, and these teams had a 1,000 or very close to it. The APRs can be seen at the NCAA's Web site. "These scores are very positive," said Jon Dever, director of academic services in UA's intercollegiate athletics area. "We have some issues in some sports, but we feel comfortable that all the APR scores will continue their upward movement. We'll continue to be at or above the national average." Dever also noted that the department and the studentathletes are eagerly awaiting Honors Day awards. "We're waiting to hear about UA's honoraries, because our student-athletes compete head-to-head for academic excellence with the campus-wide population." |
