Healthful Hints

by John Kasberg, UA Risk Analyst

Preventive Health Services and Tests Save Lives and Money

Early detection and treatment of a medical problem can help save lives and lower medical costs for you and our health plan. This column is a reminder that the University's self-insured employee health plan administered by BC/BS of Alabama covers several medical services and tests done on a routine basis to help you and your PPO (in-network) doctor diagnose and treat medical problems or conditions.

Please review the following list of routine medical services covered by UA's group health plan. Remember that some medical tests when performed as part of a PPO doctor's medical exam are subject to the $25 co-pay for the PPO doctor's visit. Routine services and tests done by a non-PPO provider are not covered. If you are diagnosed with a specific medical problem by a PPO doctor, then more frequent tests and services may be done but they must be documented as non-routine tests and services on the claim filed to BC/BS of Alabama to receive proper consideration.

The covered routine services and tests under UA's health plan are:

  1. One preventive office visit a year that includes a family history, exam, blood pressure check, female breast exam and a digital exam of the rectum and prostate for males
  2. One pap smear a year for females
  3. One baseline mammogram for females age 35 to 39, then one routine annual mammogram at age 40 and up but these limits may not apply if you have a family history of breast cancer or if you are diagnosed with breast cancer
  4. One prostate specific antigen (PSA) test a year for males starting at age 40
  5. One cholesterol test every five years
  6. One complete blood count (CBC) a year
  7. One urinalysis a year
  8. One chest x-ray starting at age 35
  9. Lead screening tests starting at age 2 or twice by age 4
  10. Tuberculosis (TB) skin testing once a year for age 1 through 6; then once between ages 7 and 18, once between age 19 and 34, and once between ages 35 and 64
  11. One flexible sigmoidoscopy every three years at age 50 subject to a $75 facility co-pay
  12. One fecal occult blood test a year at age 50
  13. One double-contrast barium enema every five years at age 50
  14. One colonoscopy every 10 years at age 50 subject to a $75 facility co-pay
  15. One thyroid profile a year at age 50
  16. One electrocardiogram (EKG) a year starting at age 50
  17. One automated multi-channel lab test per year containing up to 22 clinical chemistry tests starting at age 19
  18. Routine immunizations for diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis, measles, rubella, mumps, hepatitis B, hib(meningitis, epiglottis and joint infections), chicken pox and invasive pneumococcal disease in children during the first two years of life
  19. Pneumonia and influenza vaccines beginning at age 65 if the risk factors warrant them

If you have questions about the medical tests and services covered by UA's employee health plan, you may call BC/BS of Alabama's Customer Service at 1-800-292-8868 or check the BC/BS webpage at www.bcbsal.com and click "I am a customer" for menu options.
