University of Alabama Police Department Posts Web Survey

The UA Police Department and the Women's Resource Center are conducting an online survey. This survey will help identify concerns about crime and evaluate the overall performance of the University Police and the services that it and the Women's Resource Center provide to the community. All students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to complete the survey, which should only take five minutes. The Web address for the survey is www.survey.icr.ua.edu/safety2005.htm.

UA Blues Documentary to Air

Blues guitarist and singerThe UA Center for Public Television and Radio documentary, “Richard Johnston: Hill Country Troubadour,” will air three times on Alabama Public Television during April. Produced and directed by Max Shores, the documentary profiles Richard Johnston, a one-manband who performs on Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee. Johnston stole the show at the 2001 International Blues Competition conducted by the Blues Foundation, winning first place as well as the award for most promising new blues guitarist. “Hill Country Troubadour” also follows Johnston as he visits with blues musicians from the north Mississippi hill country including R. L. Burnside, Jessie Mae Hemphill, and Kinney Kimbrough. The documentary will air Monday, April 11 at 9 p.m., Thursday, April 14 at 10 p.m., and Friday, April 22 at 10 p.m.

Quartet Society Presents the Daponte String Quartet

DaPonte String QuartetThe Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra will conclude their 2004 - 2005 concert season with a stirring salute to the works of Gioachinno Rossini (1792-1868) April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Moody Music Building Concert Hall. “Viva Rossini” will feature vocal soloists Janna Baty, soprano; Jane Dutton, mezzo soprano; Robert McPherson, tenor; and Derrick Parker, Bass-Baritone. The Tuscaloosa Community Singers, under the direction of Dr. Leslie Poss, will also be featured on the program. Leading the musicians in his fourth season will be maestro Shinik Hahm.

Individual ticket prices are $10 - $35. The matinee concert will take place Monday morning at 11 a.m. Matinee ticket prices are $2 students and $5 adults. Call the TSO office at 752-5515 for tickets or the Moody box office at 348-7111 the day of the performance.

Symphony Concludes with Rossini

The DaPonte String Quartet will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 24, in the Concert Hall of the Moody Music Building. The String Quartet Society of Tuscaloosa (SQST) offers the program sponsored by Gene Beatty Dean and the Gloria Narramore Moody Foundation. The concert will feature Schubert and a commissioned work by David Del Tredici. Members of the quartet are Stéphane Tran Ngoc, violin; Ferdinand Liva, violin; Mark Preston, viola; and Myles Jordan, cello.

The DaPonte String Quartet was formed in Philadelphia in 1991. Their mentor and coach at that time was Edgar Ortenberg of the Budapest String Quartet. The four musicians received their education at Juilliard, Peabody and the Conservatoire National SupÇrieur de Musique de Paris. From their Maine base, they have built a national and international reputation. Tickets for the DaPonte String Quartet concert are $15 and can be purchased at the door or by calling 339-1594. Admission is free for persons 18 and under and for all students with valid student identification cards. Assault/Abuse Training Available through WRC

Faculty and staff have an opportunity to develop their knowledge of resources available to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in the new Harbor training session available through the Women's Resource Center. The purpose of Harbor is to create safe places all over campus where victims of sexual assault and domestic violence can go to receive assistance according to WRC Campus Violence Project Coordinator Adam Miller.

Harbor trainings last about an hour and can be incorporated into a single staff meeting or broken into components to accommodate participant schedules. Those who complete the program will be given an identifying placard to display in their office, as well as a certificate of completion. Harbor is a program of the Campus Violence Task Force, made up of representatives from the UA Police, Athletics, Judicial Affairs, Black Faculty Staff Association and more. Funding is provided through the Department of Justice's Grant to Reduce Violence Against Women on College Campus. For more information or to schedule a Harbor training, call Adam Miller at 348-5040.
