Alabama Collegiate Summit The purpose of the Alabama Collegiate Summit is to foster communication among the next generation's statesmen. There is a growing consensus that our state needs an extensive series of reforms to remain a viable and prosperous place to live and work in the 21st century. The great hope of the next generation of politicians is that they will have the wherewithal to carry out these reforms and carry Alabama into a new era. The newest generation of leaders needs a forum in which they can discuss their ideas and opinions without undue influence of political consideration, with the intent that they will solidify their commitment to solving problems that face our state, and develop their proposals for its eventual transformation; free event sponsored by the VOTES Coalition. Sanders Lecture Series The ninth annual lecture and memorial service, "The Civil War Ends in Lower Alabama," is dedicated to the memory of UA students who rendered military service to the Confederate States of America. AnnouncementsAlice Walker to Open Signs of Race Symposium The UA Department of English Symposium "Signs of Race" is featuring writer Alice Walker as this year's keynote speaker to the symposium "Women & Others" March 17-19. New Professional Staff Assembly Convention Completed; Representatives to be Elected The Professional Staff Assembly Convention concluded Feb. 17 with the passage of the Professional Staff Assembly By Laws. The way has now been cleared for the election of Representatives to the Professional Staff Assembly. The election process will continue March 7 through March 21. Ballots and instructions will be sent through intercampus mail. Seventy people have accepted nominations to the Assembly, and results will be announced after spring break, the week of April 4. .The first meeting of the newly elected Assembly Representatives will be Thursday, April 17, in the Ferguson Center forum at 3:30 pm. Forum on "Plus/Minus" Issue Scheduled A UA Faculty Senate-sponsored forum to address the issue of a "plus/minus" system is scheduled for Wednesday, March 9, at 3:30 p.m. in advance of a faculty-wide vote on this issue. A tentative agenda follows:
A substantial amount of research and discussion on grades and the Plus/Minus Grading System was done by the Senate in 1998.
