McKinley Award, October 2004 Winner — Linda Dunn
Linda Dunn, executive secretary in the College of Engineering dean's office, was named the McKinley Employee Award winner for October 2004. Dr. Timothy Greene, former dean and currently assistant vice president in the Office for Academic Affairs was Dunn's nominator. Greene said that Dunn keeps the dean's office operating smoothly. According to the nomination letter, Greene said that "Linda takes primary responsibility for managing all of the reporting requirements and procedures for hiring all faculty in the College." Her responsibilities include managing schedules and determining priorities for meetings. She keeps detailed notes and writes official meetings. According to Greene, Dunn's work is accurate and timely. Her work habits ensure that "there is minimum stress, hurry and a great amount of day-to-day comfort in the work." Another important characteristic is Dunn's professionalism in serving as the executive secretary to five deans in the College of Engineering. Dunn's dedicated work practices demonstrate precisely the type of performance and commitment to excellence that the McKinley family had in mind when they established the McKinley Award. The McKinley Award was established by Helen H. and John K. McKinley of Darien, Conn., and Tuscaloosa in honor of John McKinley's father, Vergil Parks McKinley. The award recognizes enterprising employees who, by action or idea, contributed to the University's mission of teaching, research and service. The monthly award carries a cash prize. Vergil Parks McKinley came to UA in 1918 and retired as head of the College of Education's trade and industrial development department in 1945.
