Active and Collaborative Learning Grants

UA's Office for Academic Affairs announces a call for proposals to apply for Active and Collaborative Learning Grants, a grants program to renew and invigorate learning in 100- and 200-level courses. The SACS Reaffirmation process involves an area known as the University's Quality Enhancement Plan. Based on data collected from several sources, the University's Quality Enhancement Plan focuses on active and collaborative learning in freshman courses.

Priority will be given to proposals that

  • Develop active and collaborative learning models that might be replicated or adapted in other courses
  • Reach substantial numbers of freshman students
  • Enhance student learning
  • Include clearly stated learning outcomes and objectives for the project; plans to assess or measure these outcomes; and plans to continue to improve the course based on the assessment information
  • Are supported by the department and college

The initial due date for proposals is Wednesday, Feb. 9. As funds are available, proposals may be submitted throughout the year. Proposals should include

  • Information about the course to be modified and enhanced, including the reasons for choosing to transform this specific course and the specific course enhancements you will make
  • Endorsement of the department chair and dean
  • A budget

A specific cap on the amount of funds that may be requested is not being set. Projects that reach large numbers of freshmen will have priority; projects that involve major amounts of funding may necessitate a cost-sharing approach. Initial grant recipients for will be announced during the University's Exploring Excellence in Teaching Week, February 28-March 3. Proposals should be submitted electronically to Hank Lazer (hlazer@aalan.ua.edu). Call or e-mail Hank Lazer (348-4893, hlazer@aalan.ua.edu) or John Dew (348-9831, jdew@aalan.ua.edu ) with questions about proposals or 2004 recipients.
