The 19th Annual Sakura Festival

The 19th Annual Sakura Festival Committee at The University of Alabama is accepting the haiku from residents throughout Alabama and Japan. The theme for the 2005 Sakura Festival Haiku Contest is Hana (Japanese) or Flower (English). Haiku is a traditional Japanese poetry form comprised of three lines of five, seven, and five syllables, respectively. Entries may be written in either English or Japanese and winners are selected for four categories: 1-3 grade, 4-6 grade, 7-12 grade, and adult. Information and entry forms are available from the UA Japan Program at 348-5312, or http://bama.ua.edu/~jprogram/sakura. Winners receive cash prizes, and the deadline is March 1.

Traditional Japanese Dance

Learn traditional Japanese dance. Mariju Fujima, who has studied the Fujima style of traditional Japanese dance, will offer weekly lessons. Days and times will be arranged to fit individual schedules. Cost will be $60 for eight lessons.

Japanese Language classes are offered regularly at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Days and times will be arranged to fit individual schedules. Call JCIC to make arrangements. Cost will be $60 for eight lessons.

Discovering Alabama

Discovering Alabama with Dr. Doug Phillips announces four new shows, which have aired on Alabama Public Television, and corresponding videos: Alabama Black Belt (Part I), Alabama Black Belt (Part 2), Covington County, and Lee County. Watch for future airings on Alabama Public Television. Featuring Dr. Doug Phillips, the series airs each Sunday at 6:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Alabama Public Television. UA Church Music Conference, School of Music

UA's Church Music Conference will feature lectures, masterclasses, reading sessions in all areas of church music including organ, choral, handbells, and children's choral music. Faculty and clinicians for the conference include International Concert Organist, Christopher Herrick; UA Professor of Voice, Susan Fleming; UA Associate Professor of Organ, Faythe Freese; UA Interim Director of Choral Activities, John Ratledge; Samford University Professor of Music, Paul Richardson; UA Associate Professor of Music Education and Director of the Birmingham Children's Choir, Julie Skadsem; and University of Southern Mississippi Professor of Voice and Director of Music at The First Presbyterian Church of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Larry Smith. This conference is sponsored by the School of Music.

The conference will be held on Jan. 29 from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. in the Moody Music Building . Cost for the conference is Early Bird Registration — $50, after Jan. 21 — $60. An organ concert featuring Christopher Herrick will take place at 3:30 p.m. featuring works by Johann Sebastian Bach. The cost of admission is $5 for the general public at the door and is free for conference participants, UA Faculty and students with ID. Nightingale Day — Capstone College of Nursing

This event is for high school seniors and parents to visit campus and learn more about the UA's Capstone College of Nursing. The event is sponsored by the Capstone College of Nursing.

  • Cris Gianakos and William Hall: A 25-Year Collaboration
    Cristos Gianakos has been a working New York sculptor for the past 25 years. He has also worked in the medium of printmaking with Master Printer and university alumnus Bill Hall. This exhibition highlights their collaboration and Gianakos' preoccupation with the exchange between exterior and interior spaces. This exhibit will run through Feb. 13. Admission is free. Book talk and signing with Warren St. John, Alabama native and author of Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer: A Journey into the Heart of Fan Media. Lecture and Reading — Frye Gaillard

Lecture and reading by Frye Gaillard, author of Cradle of Freedom: Alabama and the Movement That Changed America, published by The UA Press. Cradle of Freedom puts a human face on the story of the black American struggle for equality in Alabama during the 1960s. While exceptional leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Fred Shuttlesworth, Ralph Abernathy, John Lewis, and others rose up from the ranks and carved their places in history, the burden of the movement was not carried by them alone. It was fueled by the commitment and hard work of thousands of everyday people who decided that the time had come to take a stand. UA African-American Heritage Month Activities Set

African American Heritage Month logoThe University of Alabama will host a number of events to recognize February as African-American Heritage Month.
