McKinley Award, September 2004 Winner: Ann Wright

Ann Wright
Ann Wright

Ann Wright, accounting assistant in University Libraries for almost 20 years, was named the McKinley Employee Award winner for September 2004. Harriet Deason, manager of fiscal affairs for University Libraries, nominated Wright. Deason called Wright a "front line person" in her responsibilities. According to the nomination letter, her customer services abilities are excellent. "She cheerfully provides service to everyone who enters the door of her office, calls her, or sends an email message to her."

Her responsibilities include "preparing detailed purchasing and budget reporting information."

According to Deason, Wright is complete and thorough in her work, "although she may be juggling several different tasks at the same time," Deason wrote. She comes in early "to ensure that environmental conditions are acceptable," all with a pleasant disposition and sense of humor.

She noted that Wright contributes to the success of events in the libraries because she attends to every detail. Her dedicated work practices demonstrate precisely the type of performance and commitment to excellence that the McKinley family had in mind when they established the McKinley Award.

The McKinley Award was established by Helen H. and John K. McKinley of Darien, Conn., and Tuscaloosa in honor of John McKinley's father, Vergil Parks McKinley. The award recognizes enterprising employees who, by action or idea, contributed to the University's mission of teaching, research and service. The monthly award carries a cash prize. Vergil Parks McKinley came to UA in 1918 and retired as head of the College of Education's trade and industrial development department in 1945. UA Press Authors Win National Awards

Book cover - Free Speach on TrialThree University of Alabama Press authors recently won national awards from the National Communication Association.

Richard A. Parker of Northern Arizona University was the recipient of the NCA's Franklyn S. Haiman Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Freedom of Expression. The Haiman Award is given annually to the author of published research on freedom of expression, broadly defined. Parker received the award for a collection of essays he edited, Free Speech on Trial: Communication Perspectives on Landmark Supreme Court Decisions, published by the UA Press in 2003.

Although it is unusual for a multi-author volume to be selected for the prize, the selection committee felt this book was "a unique contribution to the scholarly literature on freedom of expression." In their description of the book, the committee stated that Free Speech on Trial "serves as a model for communication scholars of the First Amendment and will be as valuable in the future as it is today."

UA Press authors Robert Hariman of Northwestern University and Frans H. van Eemeren of the University of Amsterdam were also recognized. They were two of four individuals to receive the NCA's Distinguished Scholar Award, which "recognizes and rewards a lifetime of scholarly achievement in the study of communication. Hariman is the editor of Popular Trials: Rhetoric, Mass Media, and the Law, published in 1990; van Eemeren is the coauthor of Reconstructing Argumentative Discourse, published in 1993 and released in paperback in 2002.
