"Shadow of a Gunman," by Sean O'Casey — Oct.19-24, 2004

Poet Donal Davoren lives quietly in a Dublin tenement. His neighbors, who don't understand his artistic musings, suspect Donal is concealing something and decide that he must be an IRA gunman in hiding. With themes of art, war, terrorism, and humanity's struggle to maintain sanity amidst chaos, Irish playwright Sean O'Casey's masterwork speaks to today's audiences as directly as it did to his contemporaries in the 1920s.

"Machinal," by Sophie Treadwell — Nov. 30-Dec. 5, 2004

What would drive an ordinary young woman to commit a heinous crime? Playwright Sophie Treadwell explores the struggles of Helen Jones, a woman pressured by societal expectations to squeeze into roles she doesn't fit. With echoes of early feminism, the truths of this work continue to reverberate with relevance today.

Standing Committee Forms Representative Assembly

UA's standing Professional Staff Committee has begun the process of implementing the Professional Staff Assembly. The committee earlier submitted a proposal creating the Assembly, which was approved by the executive administration, and it recently convened the Assembly's constitutional convention. Some 43 representative delegates from UA's various departments, offices and areas attended and indicated preferences for committees.

The proposal and implementation itinerary are located on UA's website through the standing comittee's page at www.committees.ua.edu.

UA Faculty Senate past and current presidents, Steve Miller and John Mason, addressed delegates. Miller noted that UA staff is as committed to the University as are faculty, and with a unifying body, they can be even more effective. He said that although staff has no comparable protection as the faculty has with tenure, he bets members will find they don't need that protection, since the administration is committed to open communication and participation in institutional governance.

Mason applauded the group for its initiative. He compared the purpose of the Assembly to the Senate, saying the emphasis for both is communication; otherwise, voices are too diffused to be effective.

The stated mission of the Assembly is that it "shall promote open communication among members of the professional staff and between the professional staff and the administration, faculty, and students. It shall serve in an advisory capacity regarding issues and/or proposals of policy, development, and operations of the University. . . ."

Regular Assembly meetings are held on the third Thursdays of the month at 3:30 p.m. in Ferguson Forum. For more information, including committees and a listing of delegates, e-mail prostaff@bama.ua.edu.
