New Faculty-Staff Clinic Opens at University Medical Center

The University Medical Center, located on the corner of University Boulevard and Fifth Avenue East, opened its Faculty-Staff clinic on July 1 to serve University employees and their family members who participate in the University Health Plan. The clinic is staffed by Board Certified Nurse Practitioners, who treat everything from colds and fever to minor injuries and rashes. Physician consultations are readily available when needed.

What do UA faculty and staff need to know about Nurse Practitioners

The new University Medical Center has certified, licensed nurse practitioners on staff to treat members of UA's health care plan. To take advantage of this new benefit, UA faculty and staff should present their new BC/BS health plan ID cards for insurance purposes. Members who have questions about this new coverage for nurse practitioners under the University's employee health plan may also call BC/BS Customer Service at 1-800-292-8868. Have your BC/BS of Alabama ID card on hand for reference.

Here are some frequently asked questions about nurse practitioners:

  1. What type of training do the nurse practitioners receive?
All BC/BS of Alabama participating nurse practitioners are master's degree prepared in advanced-practice nursing and are certified as registered nurse practitioners by an agency approved by the Alabama State Board of Nursing.
  2. How many nurse practitioners are currently practicing in the state?
There are about 1,000 practicing in Alabama, but only about 270 are BC/BS participating nurse practitioners.
  3. How do they relate to MDs?
All nurse practitioners must have a collaborating medical doctor by either being employed by or affiliated with the doctor. This connection between the NP and the MD allows for consultation as necessary.
  4. What types of services can they provide?
Nurse practitioners can perform a wide variety of professional health care services. Approved services include office visits, minor office surgery, minor emergency medical care for accidental injuries, inpatient hospital visits, office consultations and prescription medications
  5. What are the co-pays?
The co-pay is $20 for a visit to a participating BC/BS of Alabama nurse practitioner.
  6. Does our plan cover the cost of services performed by nurse practitioners outside the state of Alabama?

Most nurse practitioners participating with BC/BS of Alabama are located within Alabama. Some are located in neighboring states in counties adjoining Alabama. Call BC/BS of Alabama at 1-800-292-8868 if you have any questions. Have your BC/BS of Alabama ID card with you when you call.
