Awards

The McKinley Award was established by Helen H. and John K. McKinley of Darien, Conn., and Tuscaloosa in honor of John McKinley's father, Vergil Parks McKinley. The award recognizes enterprising employees who, by action or idea, contributed to the University's mission of teaching, research and service. The monthly award carries a cash prize. Vergil Parks McKinley came to UA in 1918 and retired as head of the College of Education's trade and industrial development department in 1945. If you would like to nominate an employee for future awards, contact Human Resources at 348-6690.

Carol Lipscomb, accounting specialist in facilities business administration for 12 years, was named the McKinley Employee Award winner for May 2004. Her nominator, DeLane Bailey, assistant director, facilities business administration, primarily noted Lipscomb's work ethic. Bailey went so far as to say there may not be a more deserving employee on campus. "Facilities business administration, as well as other employees on this campus, call upon Carol's knowledge daily," wrote Bailey.

"Her dedication and hard work pay off in the accuracy of her work. I depend on Carol and she never lets me down," wrote Bailey. Lipscomb assists the office of construction administration with the large construction budgets and advises all the project managers on budgetary questions and accounting concerns and processes. She maintains the budget for the maintenance funded work orders and assists all the shop managers with budgetary questions and issues.

A second nominator, Michael Reid, director of business administration within facilities business administration, echoes Bailey's praise. "All of these [construction] projects involve large sums of expenditures and very detailed contracts which require extensive record-keeping. Carol has always performed these duties in a superior manner," he wrote.

Lipscomb came to the facilities area from financial accounting. According to her nominator, she has brought a broad span of knowledge to facilities, which translates to others depending on her expertise. Her dedicated work practices demonstrate precisely the type of performance and commitment to excellence that the McKinley family had in mind when they established the McKinley Award.

Thomas Hardy, associate director for resident and student staff services, was named the McKinley Employee Award winner for June 2004. His nominator, Jr. King, associate director for administration, primarily noted Hardy's concern for staff members and students and his problem-solving abilities. He is always looking for ways to enhance the UA experience, according to King. "[He is concerned about] ensuring that UA provides a safe, welcoming environment that promotes a strong sense of community among our residents," wrote King.

"Tom is happiest when he is serving others," wrote King. Hardy works closely with hall directors, resident assistants and residents to develop well-rounded, highly motivated productive leaders.

Hardy assisted the Residence Hall Association in changing the focus to better serve the residents, according to King. "Tom was instrumental in helping RHA win a bid to host the 2003 South Atlantic Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls Business Conference, which drew more than 200 delegates," wrote King.

His dedication to being a team member and to see the "big picture" demonstrate the type of performance and commitment to excellence that the McKinley family had in mind when they established the McKinley Award.
