University Begins Banner Transition

The University of Alabama has launched a two-year effort to transition from the existing Student Information System, Financial Information System, and Human Resource System to the new Banner Information System. Banner will serve as a single database to manage the information currently managed through three separate databases. With Banner, the University will have Web access to vital information 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in a much stronger technology infrastructure. Banner will also support the integration of on-campus and distance learning opportunities for UA students.

Dr. Judy Bonner, provost and vice president for academic affairs, participated in kicking off the Banner project last spring at a meeting of the Banner Implementation Team. Dr. Priscilla Hancock, the University's associate vice-president for information technology, is the executive sponsor for the project, which has been organized into teams that will manage the transitions in student information, financial aid, accounts receivable, finance, human resources, and technical issues within the Seebeck Computing Center.

The overall transition to Banner will occur in small phases over a twoyear period. Teams started to work in March to prepare the first portions that will "go live" in the registrar's organization in the spring of 2005, when students will use the Banner system to register for classes for the following fall. All campus organizations involved in advising students will need to participate in Banner Student Training during the fall semester of 2004 to prepare for this transition.
