Families with boys put up koinobori or carp streamers in their garden and a display of dolls called gogatsuningyo in a room of the house. We invite you to come and celebrate "Children's Day" with us regardless of your age.

Alabama Museum of Natural History, Smith Hall, 348-7550

  • Transformations in Clay Exhibit — This exhibit features pottery and photographs of the Sasak Potters of Lombok, Indonesia. The display details how the global market for finely crafted pottery has provided an alternative source of income for landless, poor Sasak women who in the past have depended upon men's agricultural labor wages and pottery sales to locals for everyday use. Sponsored by UA's Alabama Museum of Natural History. Through May 22, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Smith Hall. Admission is $1/children and seniors; $2/adults.   • The Journey of Lewis and Clark — Exhibit and Publications — In celebration of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial, 1803-1806, an exhibit featuring the people, places, and events along the way to the Pacific and the return to St. Louis. Also available is an exhibit of major books for scholars and general readers about the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Sponsored by University Libraries. Through April 30, Gorgas Library, First Floor. Free and open to the public.

  • Book of Good Council — A Book Arts MFA Thesis exhibition by Susan Wyssen including a selection of letterpress and binding work featuring her edition of the Hitopadesha. The Hitopadesha was letterpress printed by Wyssen with the illustrations printed on an Indian handmade paper. The edition was bound in quarter leather with a limited edition bound in full leather. The Hitopadesha, or "Book of Good Counsel," will be exhibited along with a retrospective of book work highlighting Wyssen's interest in the historical aspects of her craft, including her take on a colonial prison narrative broadside, Medieval illumination, and historical bindings.     Cahaba Lily Canoeing

    Enjoy the natural beauty of spring and paddle among rocky islets of rare Cahaba Lilies nestled in the limestone rocks of Hargrove Shoals on the Cahaba River in Central Alabama. Sponsored by UA's Alabama Museum of Natural History. Meet at Smith Hall on the UA campus. Trip will be guided by Museum naturalist guides. May 8, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Cost is $25.     Survival to Very Old Age: Lessons Learned from the Georgia Centenarian Study

    Dr. Leonard W. Poon, professor of psychology and director of the Gerontology Center at the University of Georgia, will present.     Alabama softball and baseball can host birthday parties for $75 at every home game this season. Scheduling is done on a first come, first served basis. Call Adam at 348-7497. The Media Guides can be downloaded from www.rolltide.com.
