UA Hoole Special Collections Library to Host Thesis Exhibit of "Hitopadesha"

Book cover - Book of Good CouncilThe W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library is showing Susan Wyssen's thesis exhibition, including a selection of letterpress and binding work featuring her edition of the "Hitopadesha," or Book of Good Counsel, through May 21 in the Hoole Library on the 2nd floor of Mary Harmon Bryant Hall. The text is a translation from Sanskrit of 13 tales plus the preface and introduction from the "Hitopadesha." While these stories are originally Indic, the earliest texts available are translations from a Sanskrit original, first into Persian and Syriac, then Arabic, and from Arabic into several languages including Greek and Hebrew, where they greatly influenced the literature of the Middle Ages. The "Hitopadesha" will be exhibited along with a retrospective of book work highlighting Wyssen's interest in the historical aspects of her craft, including her take on a Colonial prison narrative broadside, Medieval illumination, and historical bindings. For more information, contact Jessica Lacher-Feldman at archives@bama.ua.edu or at 348-0500.

Thomson Memorial Scholarship Reaches Endowment Level

Dr. Bailey Thomson
Dr. Bailey Thomson

A fund drive in memory of Dr. Bailey Thomson, a UA journalism professor who died in November shortly after he had been elected chair of Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform (see Dialog, Nov. 10, 2003), has reached the level needed to endow a scholarship at the University.

Contributions are still being accepted. Checks should be made out to The University of Alabama for "Thomson Scholarship" and mailed to Bonnie LaBresh, director of development, College of Communication and Information Sciences, Box 870172, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487.

Thomson and Rick Bragg, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, were named co-winners of the 2004 Clarence Cason Nonfiction Writing Award, an award given annually by the University to recognize lifetime achievements in nonfiction writing.

Among the many writing and teaching awards won by Thomson are the 1999 Society of Professional Journalists Teaching Excellence Award and the 1999 American Society of Newspaper Editors Distinguished Writing Award. He was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize twice, finishing as a finalist once.
