Burgio Named UA Distinguished Research Professor
The Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama recently named Dr. Louis D. Burgio, professor of psychology since 1998 and director of UA's Applied Gerontology Program, as a Distinguished Research Professor. The designation of this prestigious title is reserved for those professors whose accomplishments and contributions to their profession are recognized by national and international experts and audiences. UA's Distinguished Research Professors are limited in number. Other professors bearing this designation are Dr. Gary April, professor and chair of chemical engineering; Dr. Tony Freyer, professor of history and law; Dr. Howard Jones, professor of history; Dr. Stan Jones, Cudworth professor of aerospace engineering; Dr. Lowell Kispert, professor of chemistry; and Dr. Doru Stephanescu, Cudworth Professor in the department of metallurgical and materials engineering. "Designation as a Distinguished Research Professor by our Board of Trustees signifies national and international recognition in the holder's field and scholarly or research productivity of the highest order at The University of Alabama. Dr. Burgio is indeed a distinguished member of our faculty and well deserving of this recognition. We appreciate his extensive contributions to our institution and look forward to Dr. Burgio's continuing to serve as an inspiration and source of mentorship for our students and junior faculty in the future," said Dr. Judy Bonner, UA provost and vice president for academic affairs. Burgio is nationally known for his research and expertise in the areas of geropsychology, caregiving, and interventions for dementia patients, having authored or co-authored more than 125 research publications, book chapters or technical reports in the most prestigious journals in the field. He is considered a research pioneer in the care of Alzheimer's patients, their families and professional caregivers, having developed effective protocols for the treatment of caregiver stress and the improvement of nursing home resident quality of life, tangibly bettering the lives of countless individuals in Alabama and throughout the nation. Burgio has been the primary project director, co-director or primary mentor for research grants totaling more than $10 million awarded by the nation's top research centers such as the National Institute on Aging, the National Institute for Mental Health, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Institute of Nursing Research, among others. He received his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Notre Dame in the areas of developmental psychology and applied behavior analysis. Randall Recognized on 10th Anniversary as Dean
