  • The Journey of Lewis and Clark, Exhibit and Publications — In celebration of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial, 1803-1806, an exhibit featuring the people, places and events along the way to the Pacific and the return to St. Louis. The Black Warrior Review is a nationally respected literary magazine that publishes the best in contemporary fiction, poetry and essays.

Marr's Field Journal, 348-7264, MFJ@sa.ua.edu

The MFJ is the undergraduate literary journal staffed, edited and published by UA students. Founded in 1989, the MFJ is celebrating its 15th anniversary. The publication was recently named a Columbia Scholastic Press Association Crown Award Finalist for 2004. This heralds MFJ as one of the top 12 college magazines in the nation. The fall 2003 issue is on sale now, and copies are sold at the Ferguson Center SUPe Store. The current editor is Bonita Weaver.

The UA Press has announced a new imprint, Fire Ant Books. One of the first to be printed in this imprint is The Constant Circle: H.L. Mencken and His Friends by Sara Mayfield with an introduction by Edmund Wilson. The Fire Ant Books, billed as "books with a bite," are trade paperback books that focus on a wide variety of topics with national appeal.

Language Variety in the South: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives

The three-day symposium will include more than 100 different presentations on language and dialects of the South, covering areas from the roots of English to the influence of race on language. More than 200 people are expected to attend the symposium, which is open to the general public. Sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, National Science Foundation. Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life is a non-competitive, overnight event. Teams are recruited from businesses, clubs, families, friends, hospitals, churches, schools, and service organizations. Each group comes up with a team theme and members take turns walking or running around the Quad during the night. Games and activities are held during the event. Money raised supports the American Cancer Society research, education, advocacy and patient services programs. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society/Students United for a Cure. Gourd Masks & Containers

Gourds have been used widely by Native Americans for bowls, bottles, and masks. Choose a gourd and decorate it using traditional Indian designs and colors or create an original pattern. April 17, 4 p.m., UA's Moundville Archaeological Park. Cost is $25. This workshop is for ages 10 and older. Transportation is available from Smith Hall, 427 6th Avenue on the UA campus. Pet PAW'loosa

Modeled after Birmingham's Do Dah Day, Tuscaloosa's Pet PAW'loosa will feature dog events and agility demonstrations, contests and prizes, children's games, local celebrities, professional pet photos, live music, and a fundraiser "Woof and Wag Walk," rain or 'shine. Sponsored by T-Town PAWS & Bama PAWS (People for Animal Welfare & Safety). April 17, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., UA Quad. Cost is free. Day of Silence Project

The Day of Silence Project consists of a 9-hour vow of silence during which participants pass out cards explaining their advocacy for LGBTQ issues rather than speaking. The discussion is part of "Opening Doors, Embracing Race," a lecture and discussion series on the theme "Remembrance, Forgiveness, and Reconciliation." Sponsored by the UA Coalition for Diversity and Inclusiveness; co-sponsored by the African American Association, Alabama Association of Professional Latin Americans, Black Faculty and Staff Association, Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority, International Student Association, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Student Coalition Against Racism, and SGA Diversity Committee.
