The Black Warrior Review is a nationally respected literary magazine that publishes the best in contemporary fiction, poetry and essays. The publication was recently named a Columbia Scholastic Press Association Crown Award Finalist for 2004. This heralds MFJ as one of the top 12 college magazines in the nation. The UA Press has announced a new imprint, Fire Ant Books. One of the first to be printed in this imprint is The Constant Circle: H.L. Mencken and His Friends by Sara Mayfield with an introduction by Edmund Wilson. The Fire Ant Books, billed as "books with a bite," are trade paperback books that focus on a wide variety of topics with national appeal. Language Variety in the South: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives The three-day symposium will include more than 100 different presentations on language and dialects of the South, covering areas from the roots of English to the influence of race on language. More than 200 people are expected to attend the symposium, which is open to the general public. Sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, National Science Foundation. Relay for Life The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life is a non-competitive, overnight event. Teams are recruited from businesses, clubs, families, friends, hospitals, churches, schools, and service organizations. Each group comes up with a team theme and members take turns walking or running around the Quad during the night. Games and activities are held during the event. Money raised supports the American Cancer Society research, education, advocacy and patient services programs. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society/Students United for a Cure. Choose a gourd and decorate it using traditional Indian designs and colors or create an original pattern. April 17, 4 p.m., UA's Moundville Archaeological Park. Cost is $25.
