Important Faculty Information Needed for SACS Site

Before completing the semester, faculty are asked to review UA-OPS (University of Alabama's On-line Profile System) which can be found on the UA-SACS website at https://sacs.ua.edu/ops.cfm. Check to see if you are listed. And, check to make certain that:

  • Your credentials have been posted and are complete.
  • A hot link to your curriculum vitae has been activated.
  • A hot link to the syllabus for each course you taught this year has been activated.

If the syllabi posted on UA-OPS do not provide all information stated in The Faculty Handbook, you will need to provide the updated syllabus that will be used the next time the course is taught. This information and sample language for writing student learning outcomes are at https://sacs.ua.edu/courdescript.html. SACS evaluators will check the syllabi to determine what the learning outcomes for each course are. Or, stated more simply, the syllabus must specify what the faculty expects students to know and/or be able to do as a result of taking this course.

SACS Reaffirmation logoEvery course syllabus must provide the information specified in The Faculty Handbook, including prerequisites, course description, learning outcomes (objectives), major examinations and assignments, grading policy, policies for attendance and making up missed course work (including examinations), and required texts and other course materials.

In addition to the information needed for UA-OPS, a copy of the transcript for your highest degree earned must be in your dean's office.

In order for UA to complete the compliance certification process that is required as part of the reaffirmation of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, it is very important for all faculty members to provide this information before they leave the campus at the end of this spring semester.

While UA-OPS was developed to allow the team of evaluators from peer institutions to check to see if The University of Alabama is in compliance with the SACS requirements for accreditation, this on-line system will continue to provide a management tool that facilitates the efficient, ongoing documentation of the high quality of UA's academic programs and administrative and support services.

All of the efforts that faculty, staff, and administrators have made this year to ensure compliance with the SACS requirements are greatly appreciated. For more information, contact Dr. John Schmitt, associate dean of the Graduate School and institutional accreditation officer, at 348-8283 or jschmitt@aalan.ua.edu.
