  • March 1-31 — 18th Annual Sakura Festival
  • March 13 — Matsuri in the Mall festival, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., McFarland Mall. Part of the Sakura Festival, Matsuri in the Mall affords an opportunity to experience Japanese culture. Through an exciting variety of Japanese cultural performances and exhibits, we hope to build friendship and to increase our understanding of the country and peoples of Japan.

Alabama Museum of Natural History

  • Transformations in Clay Exhibit — This exhibit features pottery and photographs of the Sasak Potters of Lombok, Indonesia. The display details how the global market for finely crafted pottery has provided an alternative source of income for landless, poor Sasak women who in the past have depended upon men's agricultural labor wages and pottery sales to locals for everyday use. Sponsored by UA's Alabama Museum of Natural History. March 11-May 22, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Smith Hall. Admission is $1 for children and seniors, $2 for adults.   • Sheep to Shawl — This educational family event will present the historic technique of weaving raw wool into refined items. Museum naturalists and demonstrators from the West Alabama Fiber Guild will sheer a sheep on site, prepare its fleece for spinning into yarn, and make a shawl for raffle. Enjoy old-fashioned games, stories, songs, and crafts throughout the day. Sponsored by UA's Alabama Museum of Natural History. March 20, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Smith Hall. Cost is $1 for children and seniors, $2 for adults. Raffle tickets for a finished shawl will be sold for $5. Raffle tickets will be available in advance or the day of the event. Black Warrior Review

The Black Warrior Review is a nationally respected literary magazine that publishes the best in contemporary fiction, poetry and essays.

The MFJ is the undergraduate literary journal staffed, edited and published by UA students. Founded in 1989, the MFJ is celebrating its 15th anniversary. The publication was recently named a Columbia Scholastic Press Association Crown Award Finalist for 2004. This heralds MFJ as one of the top 12 college magazines in the nation. The fall 2003 issue is on sale now, and copies are sold at the Ferguson Center SUPe Store. The current editor is Bonita Weaver.

  • Victorian Exotica: Japanese Design Influence in 19th Century Decorative Trade Binding Styles. The exhibit will feature selected books from the Lafcadio Hearn Collection, as well as other 19th century books from the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library that feature Japanese style and design elements, as well as traditional Japanese books and binding from the l9th and early 20th centuries. March 1-31.

  • Chakaia Booker: Divine Detritus by the Black Warrior River. Opening reception is March 12 from 6-8 p.m. at 103 Garland Hall. The exhibit runs through April 18 and is free and open to the public. For more information contact Vicki Rial at 348-1891.

The UA Press has announced a new imprint, Fire Ant Books. One of the first to be printed in this imprint is The Constant Circle: H.L. Mencken and His Friends by Sara Mayfield with an introduction by Edmund Wilson. The Fire Ant Books, billed as "books with a bite," are trade paperback books that focus on a wide variety of topics with national appeal.

Adventure Race

Race check-in starts at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 9:30 a.m. at Rock Quarry boat launch on Lake Tuscaloosa. The race will consist of approximately three miles of canoeing, three miles of running, and five miles of mountain biking. The race is open to members of the public age 16 and older. Participants under the age of 19 must have a signed permission form from a parent or guardian. Two person teams will compete in three categories: men's, women's and co-ed divisions. Prizes from Alabama Outdoors will be awarded to the top three finishers in each division and everyone who completes the race will receive a race T-shirt. Sponsored by Outdoor Recreation, Alabama Outdoors. March 13, 9:30 a.m., Rock Quarry Boat Launch on Lake Tuscaloosa. Team entry fees are $40 if registered before March 8, $50 afterward until day of race. GMO, Friend or Foe: the Science, Ethics, and Economics of a Genetically Modified Food Supply

A one-day intensive education program concerning the scientific, economic and ethical ramifications of GMO technology. You will hear four acclaimed speakers and UA faculty experts who will give you a solid understanding of GMO. One hour course credit or CEU credit may be earned. Civil War Memorial: Sanderws Lecture Series

Dedicated to the memory of UA students who served in the armed forces of the Confederate States of America, the annual lecture series includes talks from biographical sketches and personal wartime experiences on campus and in the field to unit histories and accounts of battles or skirmishes involving some 900 UA alumni and its Corps of Cadets. Sponsored by UA's Alabama Museum of Natural History & the William Stanley Hoole Special Collections Library. March 20. 8:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m., Alston Hall.
