UA's Leadership Academy has moved into full swing this year. The purpose of the Academy is to broaden the participants' understanding of leadership and the University, building the capacity for creating change, both within the institution and in the community. The Academy requires a two-year commitment, engaging participants in 10 workshops on subjects such as strategic planning, budgeting, mentoring, and current leadership theory. Participants will receive assessment feedback using the Leadership Practices Inventory and will be assigned a student leader to mentor. The Academy's Advisory Board reviewed applications and selected 16 participants from across the campus to participate as the first cohort in the Leadership Academy. Participants include Karen Baldwin, Susan Caples, John Chambers, Caryl Cooper, Jim Hall, John Higginbotham, Jean Herron, Stacy Jones, Christopher King, Bonnie Labresh, Dixie MacNeil, Carlton McHargh, Steve Miller, Donna Packa, Jimmy Williams and Gwen Williams. The Leadership Academy brought Louise Sandmeyer, executive director for assessment, planning, and improvement at the Pennsylvania State University to campus for a workshop on strategic planning. Dr. Marilyn Hazzar-Lineberger, from Clark Atlanta University, conducted a workshop in early 2004 on race, culture and conflict. Dr. Tom Harris, from UA's College of Communication and Information Sciences, recently conducted a workshop on communication skills. In April, the participants will meet with Chancellor Malcolm Portera, President Robert Witt, Provost Judy Bonner, Dr. Charles Nash, vice chancellor for academic affairs, and Dr. Margaret King, vice president for student affairs, to discuss leadership development. Applications are now being accepted for participants for the next UA Leadership Academy that will begin this fall and continue to the spring of 2006. The Leadership Academy is part of the University's Continuous Quality Improvement initiative. Applications are on the Web at www.leadershipacademy.ua.edu. Send applications to the Office of Continuous Quality Improvement and Planning, Box 870114, by March 26. Selection of applicants will be made by the Leadership Academy's Advisory Council, which is also posted on the site. |
