Fire Ant Books logoThe UA Press has announced a new imprint, Fire Ant Books. One of the first to be printed in this imprint is The Constant Circle: H.L. Mencken and His Friends, by Sara Mayfield with an introduction by Edmund Wilson. The Fire Ant Books, billed as "books with a bite," are trade paperback books that focus on a wide variety of topics with national appeal.

Events

The Crimson Calendar at http://events.ua.edu is UA's campus-wide events calendar. The Crimson Calendar displays each day's events, is searchable and links to other related information and sites. Anyone may submit an event to the Crimson Calendar.

Feb. 14 — "Scents of the Heart" Presentation and Valentine's Day Dinner. The UA Museum of Natural History and the UA Arboretum will host a St. Valentine's Day dinner featuring an aromatically inspired gourmet meal and a presentation by one of America's leading fragrance authorities. Annette Green, a prominent figure in the international fragrance industry who established the Oscars of the fragrance industry and the country's first fragrance museum, will present "Scents of the Heart." Her presentation focuses on the roles fragrance has played in society, from earliest of times, and the effects of aromas on human behavior. 6:30 p.m. Smith Hall. The event is $40 per person. Phone 553-3278 for reservations.

Feb. 18 — 2004 Spring Career Fair. The bi-annual event, at 9 a.m. in the Ferguson Center Ballroom gives UA students and alumni a chance to meet potential employers on campus. Companies and nonprofit organizations offering full-time, part-time, internship and summer employment opportunities will participate. The fair provides employers with the opportunity to market their organizations on campus and identify future employees. UA baseball and softball seasons open Feb. 13. Softball begins with the Hampton Inn Bama Bash. Details are TBA. Baseball opens with a game against New Orleans at 6:30 p.m. Alabama softball and baseball can host birthday parties for $75 at every home game this season. Scheduling is done on a first come, first served basis. Call Adam at 348-7497. The Media Guides can be downloaded from www.rolltide.com.

Mark Your Calendar: 2004 Exploring Excellence in Teaching Week

Continuing its emphasis on "Best Teaching Practices," the University has scheduled the 2004 Exploring Excellence in Teaching week, Feb. 23-27. This initiative is in line with UA President Robert Witt's goal that the University be "the university of choice for the best and brightest students in Alabama and a university of choice for all other exceptional students." Discussion with Dr. Amy Driscoll, Director of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment, California State University, Monterey, 3 p.m., AIME Building (north side of the parking lot across from the Ferguson Center). Driscoll has worked on her campus to design an outcomes-based assessment program for both general education and the major programs of study. Driscoll's visit is sponsored by the College of Arts and Science.
