Benefits Office Presents Pre-Retirement Seminar The UA Benefits Office will present its 29th annual pre-retirement seminar Nov. 17 and 18 beginning at 6 p.m. each evening in the Moot Court Room at the School of Law. Speakers will include Don Yancey, executive director of the Retirement Systems of Alabama; Alan Cole, institutional consultant for TIAA/CREF, and Billy White, field representative for the Social Security Administration. The Benefits Office staff will also be available for a "Question and Answer" session. Celebrity Series to Present Pianist Olga Kern Nov. 18 The School of Music's Celebrity Series will present pianist Olga Kern in concert on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Moody Music Concert Hall. The concert is sponsored by the Gloria Narramore Moody Foundation. Kern has been captivating fans and critics alike with her passionately confident musicianship and vivid stage presence for years. She has performed in many of the world's most important venues, including the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, Symphony Hall in Osaka, La Scala in Milan and the Salle Cortot in Paris. Her final round Van Cliburn International Piano Competition performances with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and Maestro James Conlon are showcased in the new PBS series "Concerto." Research Advisory Committee Seeks Applications for Grants The Research Advisory Committee (RAC), through the Office for Sponsored Programs, is currently accepting applications for research grant funding for full-time permanent UA faculty and staff. Applicants may request funding of up to $5,000 for grant-inaid (salary for all or part of the summer), assistants, supplies, equipment, books and travel. The deadline for applications is Jan. 30, 2004. The RAC manual may be obtained from the Office for Sponsored Programs web site at http://osp.ua.edu/RAC.html. CWN Membership Available to UA Women The Capstone Women's Network (CWN) seeks to enrich the life experiences of women at The University of Alabama by providing networking opportunities to its members, sponsoring informative presentations and discussions, and giving scholarship support to adult undergraduate women studying at UA. Membership is open to all UA women employees, graduate students and retirees. Dues are $25 annually for faculty, staff and retirees and $10 for graduate students. Indian Dancers to Perform During International Education Week Dancers and musicians from Bangalore, India will perform Nov. 17 from 7-9 p.m. in the Ferguson Theatre. The program will feature live music and the expressive dance form of Bharatanatyam. The theme is "Sadbhavana" which means "Message for Peace in the World." The program, a part of UA's recognition of International Education Week Nov. 17-21, is free and open to the public. Fulbright Workshop Scheduled for Nov. 19 Susan Sharpe, CIES Fulbright campus liaison from Washington, D.C., will present a workshop for faculty and staff Wednesday, Nov. 19 from 1-3 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Forum. Fulbright positions are available in 140 countries around the world for periods from two weeks to a full year. Interested faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the workshop to learn about lecturing and research opportunities, obtain advice on which country to apply to and making contacts abroad, learn how to prepare the Fulbright application, and explore how UA can host visiting foreign Fulbright scholars. WRC to Show Film at Brown Bag Lunch The Women's Resource Center continues its Brown Bag Lunch Fridays in the Ferguson Forum from noon-1:15 p.m. On Friday, Nov. 21, the film, "Mothers and Daughters: The Tie that Bonds" will be shown. The film explores the mother-daughter relationship across ethnic and generational lines; it is filled with candid, emotional interviews with daughters, mothers and grandmothers. Bama Dining Offers "Thank You" Packages UA faculty and staff can order "Thank You" packages filled with gourmet chocolates, crackers, and peanuts from Bama Dining. Students to be Instructed to Use Campus ID UA faculty are asked to instruct students to use Campus-Wide ID, not Social Security numbers, as their identification number on multiple-choice exams that will be scored by the Testing and Data Management Services Office. The CWID goes on the form beginning in block A. If students fail to enter their CWIDs properly, they will not have access to their exam grades on Testing and Data Management Service's Information Repository. Cards Help Students Thank Professors Graduating students now have an easy way to express their gratitude to a favorite professor. Students who expect to graduate in December received a postcard in their graduation packets giving them the opportunity to write "A Note of Thanks to a Favorite Professor." Students have been instructed to turn these cards in to any University office and ask that they be put in with campus mail. Cards are pre-addressed to the Supply Store, where staff will redirect them to the appropriate department. Please be aware of this program and assist any students who wish to turn in cards.
