'Kickoff on the Quad' Coming Up
UA's United Way Campaign Kicks Off The University's United Way Campaign kicked off recently and announced its goal of $200,000. This year's theme is "Solving Problems -- UA Leading the Way." The University is the number one provider of funds for the worthy causes that benefit from United Way funding, including the 27 agencies that represent 125,000 clients. This year's UA chair is Dr. Carolyn Dahl, dean of the College of Continuing Studies. UA Welcomes Pulitzer Prize Winning Author
Jane Smiley, author of 10 works of fiction, including A Thousand Acres, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1992, will hold a reading at the Bama Theatre, 600 Greensboro Ave., at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 21. Her essays have appeared in Vogue, The New Yorker, Harper's, The Nation and The New York Times Magazine, among others. The public is invited to attend. UA Organist to Present Recital UA's School of Music will feature Faythe Freese, associate professor of organ, in concert Sunday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Moody Music Building. Freese will perform on UA's impressive Holtkamp Organ, which stands three-stories high with 5,000 pipes. The program will include Prelude and Fugue in D Major, S. 532 by Johann Sebastian Bach; Serenade Premier Livre d'Orgue (Suite du deuxieme ton) by Louis-Nicolas Clérambault; Fantasy for Organ on the Choral: Wie schön leucht't uns der Morgenstern, Op. 40 No. 1 by Max Reger; Choral in a Minor by César Franck; Rubrics by Dan Locklair; and Pageant by Leo Sowerby. The program is free and open to the public. Freese holds degrees in organ performance and church music from Valparaiso University and Indiana University. Her performances have been described as "powerful ... masterful ... impressive ...brilliant," Freese is in high demand as a recitalist. As a Fulbright scholar and an Indiana University/Kiel Ausstausch Programme participant, she studied the works of Jean Langlais with the composer in France, and the works of Max Reger with his former student Heinz Wunderlich in Germany. Women's Basketball Season Tickets on Sale For just $32, first time faculty and staff season ticket purchasers will not only get a ticket to 11 home games but will also receive a free Alabama t-shirt and earn a chance to win a free trip to the SEC women's basketball tournament. Alabama Volleyball Gears Up for Home Stretch Alabama volleyball has just added 1,000 new permanent seats to the "CAVE." Come check out the new and improved arena and cheer the Tide on to victory. There are fun promotions for the kids and you can probably catch a free t-shirt when the Tide scores an ace. Admission is always free so bring the kids for some lively entertainment.
