Sessions are offered every Monday. Three ways to register and to check out training material:
Human Resources Development training sessions will be conducted at G54 Rose Administration building unless otherwise stated. Persons with special needs should contact Margie Karrh. The Training Resource Center (TRC) offers videos for a staff development "lunch and learn" program. The TRC accommodates six to eight people. UA's standing Faculty and Staff Benefits Committee held its first meeting of the academic year Aug. 27. At this meeting, the committee was presented with information about a recommendation from Human Resources that UA add VIVA Health as an optional health (including dental) plan effective Jan. 1, 2004. A VIVA Health representative, Scott McDuffie, will attend the next committee meeting (Sept. 11) to answer questions about the VIVA plan. In the meantime, the committee is trying to gather as much information as possible about this plan. At this time, the consensus of the committee is to recommend that a decision on this option be postponed for a year in order to allow time for more careful study; however, the committee will not vote on this issue until the next meeting. Contact a committee member with your questions, comments, suggestions or concerns.
Healthful Hints: The UA Health Fair By John Kasberg, UA Risk Analyst UA's 8th annual Employee Health Fair will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Coleman Coliseum in the concourse area from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. UA employees and retirees must show their ACT Card to gain entry and receive free health tests and services that day. No one under age 18 will be allowed into the health fair. To receive accurate test results, employees and retirees should fast at least 12 hours before the health fair and wear short sleeve shirts or blouses to help in the testing process. All health fair participants will be given a red health fair checklist card to track their health tests. At the bottom of the checklist card will be a section to fill in an employee or retiree's name, department or address and telephone number to register for a door prize by placing that information into a raffle barrel at the north end of the concourse during the fair. The health fair checklist will also have coupons at the top to receive free refreshments and food samples provided at the fair. Some 90 vendors are scheduled to showcase health awareness, preventive health care, healthy lifestyles and diets. Watch for signs at the north entrance inside Coleman Coliseum Concourse pointing to the location of each vendor's booth or table. There will also be a health fair map at the entrance showing where each vendor is located. This year the grand door prize will be $100 for some lucky employee but the employee must get or receive two or more of the free six health screening tests or services to qualify for that grand door prize. The following providers will do free health tests: Capstone Medical Center nurses will provide 1,000 free flu shots on a first come first served basis. The Veteran's Administration will do 1,000 free blood sugar tests on a first come first served basis. DCH Regional Medical Center will do 350 free Lipid profile cholesterol tests on a first come first serve basis. The UA department of communicative disorders will do free hearing tests in the first aid station at the South end of Coleman. Tuscaloosa Ophthalmology will do free eye screening tests on a first come first serve basis. WAL-MART Vision Center will do free eye screening tests on a first come first serve basis. The Capstone College of Nursing will have health information regarding diabetes and other health conditions. Other vendors will be doing blood pressure checks. United Blood Services (UBS) will have a blood donation drive at the Southwest corner of the concourse. However, donors must give blood BEFORE getting a flu shot. Donors should be prepared to complete a blood donation questionnaire, list any currently prescribed medicines, and tell about any travels outside the United States in the past few months. All blood donors at the fair will receive a free T-shirt from UBS and will qualify for one special door prize at the end of the health fair. If you plan to donate blood, then you should not fast before coming to the health fair. Alabama coaches will be on hand at the Coaches Corner inside Coleman Coliseum Concourse on the north end to meet folks and to sign autographs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Direct any questions about the UA Employee Health Fair to John Kasberg in Risk Management at 348-8874 or jkasberg@bama.ua.edu. More details are also available on the Web at http://hr.ua.edu/riskmgmt/health_fair.htm. |
