Deadline for Submissions to Faculty/Staff Campus Directory Approaching

Cover of UA Campus Directory, 2003-2004Is your individual, campus directory listing up to date? First, check pages 129 through 202 of the 2002-03 Campus Directory.

Is it time for changes? Go online to http://directory.ua.edu. Follow the link at the bottom of the Web page to the online update form.

Has your information changed? Enter only the information you want to change. OR enter only the information you want to add. OR for information you want to remove, enter delete in the proper box(es).

Are you new to campus? Take a few minutes to review the printed listings, then enter all the information you want to have listed in the printed version of the directory. (The online listings show campus information only.)

If you don't have Internet access, call 348-5767 to request a listing change form. If you're not sure about the process, call 348-5767 for answers to your questions. The deadline for making changes is Aug. 29.

Moundville Archaeological Park to Hold One-Day Classes on Native American Arts, Technologies

UA's Moundville Archaeological Park will hold one-day classes on Native American arts and technologies, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., beginning July 9, with transportation available from Smith Hall, 427 6th Avenue on the UA campus. Teachers can earn professional development hours. Participants, who are at least age 10, are asked to bring a lunch. Highlights from the classes include:

  • Reed Basketry -- July 9, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Learn basic techniques of split-reed basketry still in use today by Native Americans. Spend a day at Moundville creating distinctive basket designs and take home a work of art. $25 each, ages 10 and older.
  • Gourd Masks & Containers -- July 14, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Gourds have been used widely by Native Americans for bowls, bottles, and masks. Choose a gourd and decorate it using traditional Indian designs and colors or create an original pattern. $25 each, ages 10 and older.
  • Flintknapping -- July 19, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Learn this ancient Indian technology for chipping rocks into arrowheads, spear points, knife blades, and hundreds of other tools. An expert will teach this remarkable technology that has recently resurged as a modern art form. Participants will leave with one or more arrowheads, and a growing interest in handmade utensils and weapons. $35 each, ages 12 and older.
  • Beadwork -- July 21, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Make a bracelet, belt, or necklace on a bead loom and learn Native American bead patterns and techniques. $25 each, ages 10 and older.

UA Initiates Energy Saving Steps

In a proactive effort, the University is taking steps to reduce energy costs on campus. Temperature guidelines, outlined in the University Energy Policy, will be changed to 68-70 degrees in heating and 76-78 degrees in cooling.

The Office of Facilities reminds UA faculty and staff that each individual can help save energy and costs. Suggestions include:

  • Turn off lights when leaving a room for more than 10 minutes
  • Turn off lights at night after work hours
  • Use compact fluorescent lighting
  • Turn off window air conditioning units at night
  • Shut down computers at night and on weekends

UA's CBHP Offers Help with Computer-Related Research

Each year, students enrolled in UA's Computer Based Honors Program select computer-oriented research projects to work with during the fall semester. While assigned to the project, each student will work with a faculty project leader through a contract for the work. Some 50 students will be choosing projects. The deadline for submitting a computer research project is Aug. 23. Guidelines and more information are available on-line at http://cbhp.ua.edu. The site also includes descriptions of past projects CBHP students have worked on. The CBHP has been cited by the National Institute of Education as one of the six most intriguing honors programs in the nation.

UA Group Organizing Weight Watchers Program

A group of University faculty and staff is organizing a Weight Watchers At Work Program and calling for interested parties to contact it. At least 18 people must join and all funds be collected one week prior to the start date. The program will be a 10-week prepaid program, at a discounted rate of $10.00 per week. Split payment options are available. Weight Watchers accepts cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover credit cards. The meetings are planned for Thursdays, noon-1 p.m. in Financial Accounting, room 326 Rose Administration building. The organizers have targeted Thursday, July 10 as the start date, so interested parties should contact Ann at 348-2965 or send an email to abracknell@fa.ua.edu.
