Building Community -- Human Relations for the 21st Century.

Human Relations for the 21st Century is designed to develop human relations skills, heighten awareness of others and foster a sense of community throughout the UA campus. Workshops that bear the Building Community logo are available to UA employees.

Continuous Quality Improvement

CQI Leadership Seminar Series. CQI workshops are part of the Leadership Seminar Series designed for people in academic and administrative organizations, such as deans, department chairs, directors, managers, assistant and associate directors and faculty who lead projects, or plan on moving into leadership roles. All workshops will be facilitated by John Dew, director for Continuous Quality Improvement. Contact the CQI Office at 348-9831 to schedule workshops, which are designed for 2-4 hours.

Miscellaneous

New Employee Orientation introduces all new UA employees to campus life and provides them and employees with a status change (regular, part-time or temporary) an opportunity for benefits advisement and enrollment. New employees and employees with status change must pre-register and attend a New Employee Orientation session within the first 30 days of employment to be eligible for health insurance. Sessions are offered every Monday.

Three ways to register and to check out training material:

Human Resources Development training sessions will be conducted at G54 Rose Administration building unless otherwise stated. Persons with special needs should contact Margie Karrh.

The Training Resource Center (TRC) offers videos for a staff development "lunch and learn" program. The TRC accommodates six to eight people.

On-the-Job Injury Time Period Clarified

The following statement from UA's Office of Risk Management clarifies points regarding the time period allowed by the State Board of Adjustment to file a claim for benefits related to an on-the-job injury (OJI) at The University of Alabama: "It is the policy of The University of Alabama to protect its employees from undue financial hardship resulting from job-related injuries or disabilities that occur while employed with The University of Alabama and while following common safety practices at work. The OJI policies and procedures to report or claim an on-the-job injury are spelled-out in The University of Alabama's Staff Handbook on pages 16, 17 and 18 which basically allow an employee two (2) work days to report an OJI. These handbooks were distributed by the University in August 2002 to all UA employees. In addition, The University of Alabama's Human Resources webpage address for The Office of Risk Management is at hr.ua.edu/riskmgmt/ and gives an abbreviated overview of the OJI policy and procedures for UA employees to follow to report an OJI, receive initial medical treatment for an OJI, documentation of an OJI and follow-up medical care for an OJI.

Any claim for benefits filed with the State Board of Adjustment is subject to the statute of limitations designated by that agency. The State Board of Adjustment has clarified that the statute of limitations period is one year from the date of the on-the-job injury. Please note this clarification."

Applying for a Job at UA Now Web-Based

UA's Human Resources Department has unveiled a ground-breaking new Internet-based application system for applying for a job at the University. The J.O.B. site (Job Opportunities at Bama) allows job seekers to conduct the entire application process online -- including searching for positions, completing and submitting job applications and tracking the status of applications -- from any computer with Internet access. Applicants can create their applications online at the J.O.B. Site and apply for positions through the new system. Human Resources no longer accepts paper applications, faxed applications or emailed resumes. The system can be accessed from the University Web site or by going directly to www.jobs.ua.edu. Filling out the online application form takes about 20 to 30 minutes and applying for a position takes a few additional mouse clicks. Cover letters and resumes can be included. Applicants without Internet access can use personal computers located in the Human Resources Service Center, University Libraries, Alabama State Employment Service and at most public libraries. For more information, call the Human Resources Service Center 348-7732.

Job seekers can save their completed applications in the J.O.B. Site for at least a year, allowing them to apply for multiple positions over a period of time. They can also obtain detailed information about job duties and skill requirements for each position. In addition to better-serving University job applicants, the new system will streamline the University's job-listing and application review processes. "We receive 11,000 applications per year," Greg Gaddis, HRIS Administrator, said. "The review process was completely manual, labor intensive and very cumbersome." The J.O.B. Site will allow Human Resources staff and departmental supervisors to review applications online, resulting in significant cost reductions in paper, copying, and records storage. It should also prove to be a great time-saver for University staff.

HR Development Training Calendar Goes Electronic for Summer 2003!

As a cost savings effort, HR Development will not distribute the regular printed brochure of their training and development calendar for the Summer 2003 term. Dialog will continue to run the bi-weekly updates (see the training schedule below), and additional notices will be sent to employees electronically reminding them of training opportunities.
