UA Commemorates 40th Anniversary of Desegregation June 9-11

Collage of images representing the Opening Doors commemorationThe University is remembering events of June 11, 1963, when Vivian Malone (now Vivian Malone Jones) and James Hood enrolled at UA despite then-Gov. George Wallace's "stand in the schoolhouse door." The three-day program, "Opening Doors: 40th Year Commemoration," is taking place June 9-11. (See the May 5 issue of Dialog on the Web for all the information and a listing of the Pioneers.) In one event, UA will honor 40 outstanding pioneers who played key roles in breaking racial barriers on campus. The "Pioneer Recognition Program" will be held Tuesday, June 10 at 8 p.m., in the Moody Music Concert Hall. The event's keynote speaker will be Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose father, Robert F. Kennedy Sr., was a key player in the desegregation of the University as U.S. attorney general. Advanced reservation is required for the Tuesday evening events. For details, see www.ua.edu/openingdoors/.

UA Sorority Rush Returns to August Schedule

Panhellenic sorority rush at the University will return to an August schedule this fall and will be held before classes start for the fall semester. The timing is a change from the last three years when rush was held two to three weeks into the semester. While rush events were scheduled so as not to conflict with most classes, students and their parents have repeatedly expressed concern that the many evening events made it difficult to focus on their studies.

Rush events will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 12 and continue through Monday, Aug. 18. Classes begin on Aug. 20. This year's fraternity rush will be conducted on a more extended schedule, with pledging beginning during the summer and continuing until Sept. 12.

The National Panhellenic Conference (NPHC), the organization of traditionally African-American fraternities and sororities, has expressed support for Panhellenic's return to earlier rush dates. NPHC organizations conduct rush in the spring semester and will not be affected by the change. The Interfraternity Council also supports the plan.

Every effort will be made to inform incoming students about rush activities and to welcome them to sign up for rush. Meetings about the Greek system -- Panhellenic, IFC and NPHC -- are scheduled during each Freshman Orientation session. Brochures will be mailed to all incoming students.
