UA's Annual Rural Health Conference to Focus on Barriers to Culturally Competent Care -- UA's fourth annual Rural Health Conference will address rural health care issues and their impact on the state of Alabama April 3-4 at the Bryant Conference Center. "Culturally Competent Health Care in Rural Alabama: Overcoming the Invisible Barriers," will bring together voices from rural communities, as well as professionals from a number of fields who have an interest in rural health. There are two pre-conference workshops on April 2 (see related item in Bulletin Board).

Lectures

The Bankhead Series of English and History Lectures and Presentations

This year's history series is "Terrorism and Counter Insurgency: Historical Perspective on the American Experience." Each talk will examine a portion of the historical background that adds perspective to today's current events.

April 1 -- History: Dr. Alexander Cochran, a former professor of history at the National Defense University, the Marine Corps University and the Air War College, will present "The U.S. in Vietnam" -- 30 ten Hoor Hall, 7:30 p.m.

April 14 -- History: David Scott Palmer, professor of political science at Boston University, is author of, among other books, Peru: The Authoritarian Tradition (1980) and The Shining Path of Peru (1994) -- 30 ten Hoor Hall, 7:30 p.m.

April 3 -- Lowder Lecture Series: Bill Smith, Alston Hall, 8 a.m.

April 14 -- Assessment and Treatment Issues in End of Life Care, 104 Little Hall, noon-1:30 p.m., lunch provided Center for Mental Health and Aging Seminar Series

April 17 -- Communication and Information Sciences Libraries Lecture, a presentation by Dr. Maurice J. UA Honors Week Set for April 14-18

Cover of Honors Week brochureThe University of Alabama will honor scholarship and leadership among students and faculty with annual Honors Week activities on campus April 14- 18. Individual colleges, schools, departments and other organizations will hold special events during the week. Faculty and staff are encouraged to check with divisions and areas of interest.

The "Tapping on the Mound" ceremony, a tradition since the early 1900s, will be held Friday, April 18, at 1:30 p.m. on the Mound at the west side of the UA Quad (rain location will be Morgan Auditorium). University-wide honoraries Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), Mortar Board, Blue Key National Honor Society, and Anderson Society will induct new members at this time.

ODK's membership is restricted to students of junior standing or above who are in the top 35 percent of their class scholastically and who exhibit leadership. Mortar Board membership, one of the highest honors granted to college seniors, is based on leadership, scholarship and service. Blue Key National Honor Society recognizes seniors who represent high scholastic ideals, leadership and diversity of background. The Anderson Society recognizes UA students who have made significant contributions to the University or the Tuscaloosa community.
