McKinley Award, March 2003 Winner -- Jane Boyd

Jane Boyd
Jane Boyd

Jane Boyd, staff assistant and administrative secretary for the department of physics and astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been employed at the University for 20 years and in her current position for 12 years. Boyd, says her nominator, has proved to be an indispensable resource who ensures the department runs smoothly.

According to her nominator, Stan Jones, chair of the department, Boyd has many responsibilities in the office, including budget matters, personnel forms, class schedules, and a supervisory role.

"Because of her commitment to excellence, she works very hard at these aspects of her job, often identifying omissions made in other offices that would otherwise have cost us money," Jones wrote.

Jones points to a specific and valuable trait — Boyd's vision. "Jane sees well beyond her own desk, and well beyond the time at hand," he wrote. "She anticipates needs and brings suggestions for meeting those needs. She senses problems that might be brewing, often with a suggestion for an approach to head off the problem."

He notes that her vision also includes seeing the "big picture" when new ideas are proposed. He closed his nomination by repeating that the department relies on Boyd for many things beyond her immediate responsibilities.

The McKinley Award was established by Helen H. and John K. McKinley of Darien, Conn., and Tuscaloosa in honor of John McKinley's father, Vergil Parks McKinley. The award recognizes enterprising employees who, by action or idea, contributed to the University's mission of teaching, research and service. The monthly award carries a cash prize. Vergil Parks McKinley came to UA in 1918 and retired as head of the College of Education's trade and industrial development department in 1945. Alabama Heritage Wins Award

Alabama Heritage magazine, already a recipient of numerous awards, recently added another to its list of awards. The quarterly history magazine first published during the summer of 1986 recently won a Grand Award at the CASE District III Advancement Awards program in the "Other Magazines" category.

Judging coordinator Jennifer Hafer, publications editor at Kennesaw State University, wrote that Alabama Heritage is a beautiful magazine. "The photographs are outstanding, and the content is excellent," she wrote in the announcement letter.

Since its beginning, AH has won five CASE Gold Medal national awards in several categories, including "special interest magazines." Current editor-in-chief Donna L. Cox holds degrees from Auburn University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During graduate school, she served as the first managing editor of The Vulcan Historical Review, which became the top student history journal in the nation under her leadership. Prior to coming aboard with Alabama Heritage, Cox was communications director for an international Fortune 500 corporation.
