Search Planned for Vice President for Research University President Robert E. Witt has announced plans for a national search to identify candidates for vice president for research at UA. "Given the importance of research at The University of Alabama, I want to identify leadership at the vice presidential level to oversee research activities and to create and implement a plan to increase funded research on our campus," Witt said. "I am not aware of any tier one or tier two research university that does not have this leadership position. As part of the senior leadership on campus, the vice president for research will help us better coordinate our research efforts and compete for funded research grants." Effective March 31, Dr. Robert Wells, assistant academic vice president for research, will serve as interim vice president for research. Witt said the position of vice president for research was of such importance that he wanted interim leadership in place until the position is filled. "Bob Wells has a great track record in this area, and I am pleased he has agreed to serve during this interim period. The search process may take several months so Dr. Wells' willingness to serve is greatly appreciated." Witt said he plans to appoint a research task force to assess the research environment at the University and to develop a blueprint for advancing the University's research agenda. "The task force report will guide the efforts of the search committee which will conduct a national search," Witt said.
