Lectures
The Bankhead Series of English and History Lectures
and Presentations
This
year's history series is "Terrorism and Counter Insurgency: Historical
Perspective on the American Experience." Each talk will examine a
portion of the historical background that adds perspective to today's
current events.
- Jan. 21 -- History Lecture: "Terror in the South During the War
of American Independence," Lawrence E. Babits, 30 ten Hoor Hall,
7:30 p.m.
Babits, professor of history at East Carolina University, wrote "A
Devil of a Whipping: The Battle of Cowpens," a key Revolutionary
War battle that was later the backdrop for "The Patriot,"
starring Mel Gibson.

The
Private Life of a New South Lawyer: Stephens Croom's 1875-1876 Journal,
which includes introductory and editorial material provided by Special
Collections librarian Paul Pruitt and archivist David Durham, is the third
of the Bounds Law Library Occasional publications and available in the
library. The journal contains a great deal of information on the practice
of law in the postbellum South. It is also an example of one man's efforts
to come to terms with the legacies of the Civil War and Reconstruction.
