Capote's 'In Cold Blood' Reception, Lecture and Screening Will Thrill Audiences

Poster for In Cold BloodThe W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library on the UA campus will sponsor a reception, lecture and screening of Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" at the historic Bama Theater, 600 Greensboro Avenue in Tuscaloosa, beginning with a 6:30 p.m. reception, on Oct. 30.

This classic 1967 film is based on the work by the same name by Alabama author Truman Capote. The film stars Robert Blake and Scott Wilson. "In Cold Blood" was directed by Richard Brooks and features a chilling jazz score by Quincy Jones.

The reception will be followed by brief introductions by Dr. Louis Pitschmann, dean of the University Libraries, and Jessica Lacher-Feldman, public and outreach services coordinator for the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library. Two faculty members will present short talks: Dr. Fred Whiting, assistant professor of English and a scholar who writes about "monsters" in literature, and Dr. Stanley L. Brodsky, professor of psychology and forensic and criminal psychologist who has interviewed hundreds of death row inmates throughout the United States, will offer interesting perspectives on the film and book and the events that surround it.

Both the book and the film, "In Cold Blood," caused a great sensation throughout the United States. The book is a treatment of a most brutal crime, written in Capote's brilliant and eloquent prose. Alabama author and Pulitzer Prize winner Harper Lee, a longtime friend of Capote, accompanied him to Kansas to conduct the research on this groundbreaking work.

Tickets for the event are $5 for general admission and $4 for students and seniors. The event is underwritten by Joyce Lamont, assistant dean of UA libraries and professor emerita, and anonymous donors. The film will be screened again on Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bama Theater. A small exhibit relating to Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" will be on display in the lobby of the Hoole Special Collections Library through Nov. 1.

For more information, contact the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library at 205/348-0500 or e-mail Lacher-Feldman at jfeldma@bama.ua.edu.

Dr. Berry H. 'Nick' Tew Jr.
Dr. Berry H. "Nick" Tew Jr.

Dr. Berry H. "Nick" Tew Jr., director of Geographic Information Systems for the Geological Survey of Alabama, has been named state geologist and director of the Geological Survey and supervisor of the State Oil and Gas Board, effective immediately.

The appointment was made by University of Alabama interim President J. Barry Mason and confirmed by Gov. Don Siegelman. Tew fills the position vacated by the retirement of Dr. Donald F. Oltz Jr., who had led the Geological Survey since 1996.

Tew will formally hold the title of state geologist and oil and gas board supervisor for the Geological Survey of Alabama/State Oil and Gas Board. The cooperative governmental agencies are housed on the UA campus. Tew is also an adjunct faculty member in UA's department of geological sciences.

Tew has worked at the Survey for the past 18 years, the last nine as director of its Geographic Information Systems/Remote Sensing Program. He earned his doctorate in geology at The University of Alabama, where he also earned master's and bachelor' s degrees.

Tew has experience in all the agencies' major program and research areas, including economic geology and mineral resources, geologic mapping, oil and gas regulation, hydrogeology, environmental geology, coastal zone geology and educational outreach activities.

Having earlier served as an exploration geologist with Cities Services Oil and Gas Company, in Oklahoma and Mississippi, Tew also has experience in the private sector oil and gas industry. He is a professional geologist licensed by the Alabama State Board of Licensure for Professional Geologists, a 21-year-member of the American Association for Petroleum Geologists, chairs the technical committee of the Alabama Geographic Information Council, and is a current nominee for vice president for the Gulf Coast Section of the Society of Sedimentary Geology.
