McKinley Award, June 2002 Winner -- Roxanne Gregg

Roxanne Gregg
Roxanne Gregg

Roxanne Gregg, administrative assistant to Dr. Andrew Sorensen, former president of The University of Alabama, and currently to Dr. Barry Mason, interim president of UA, has been at the University since 1976, when she was employed in loans receivables, then located in Rose Administration building. Gregg went to the Office of the President in 1985 to take the front-desk position of administrative secretary.

Her nominator, Dr. Andrew Sorensen, was intimately aware of how much the McKinley Award meant to its creator, John McKinley, who wished to award employees who provide dedicated service to UA. "Therefore, it is without reservation that I nominate my administrative assistant for this special recognition," wrote Sorensen in his nominating letter.

Sorensen praised Gregg for being "a tireless ambassador for The University of Alabama." "Whether acting in her official capacity ... at numerous University functions ... or just enjoying an evening at the ballpark supporting Crimson Tide sports, she maintains her professional image on behalf of The University of Alabama," he wrote.

"Roxanne's daily resourcefulness, originality, and creativity to problem solving are especially enterprising given the magnitude of her daily job responsibilities and the productivity she generates," Sorensen continued. He also praised her ability to keep up with and surpass his well-known high energy level. He emphatically felt that Gregg exemplified in every way the spirit and meaning of the McKinley award.

The McKinley Award was established by Helen H. and John K. McKinley of Darien, Conn., and Tuscaloosa in honor of John McKinley's father, Vergil Parks McKinley. The award recognizes enterprising employees who, by action or idea, contributed to the University's mission of teaching, research and service. The monthly award carries a $400 cash prize. Vergil Parks McKinley came to UA in 1918 and retired as head of the College of Education's trade and industrial development department in 1945. UA Press Announces Awards

The University of Alabama Press editorial board recently announced winners of two prestigious awards -- the Elizabeth Agee Prize and the Anne B. and James B. McMillan Prize. The Press is the state's only full-service scholarly publisher.

The Agee Prize has been awarded annually since 1987 to the manuscript chosen as "outstanding scholarship in the field of American literary studies." The 2001 Prize was awarded to Mark Twain, Travel Books, and Tourism: The Tide of a Great Popular Movement by Jeffrey Alan Melton, associate professor of English at Auburn University-Montgomery.

This work evaluates Twain's often-overlooked travel narratives. As travel narratives have begun to assert their place in serious literature, this book becomes important to an appreciation of Twain and as a significant contribution to American letters.

The McMillan Prize has been awarded annually since 1995 to the manuscript chosen as the "most deserving in Alabama or southern history or culture" by the Press faculty board. The 2001 Prize was awarded to Dividing Lines: Municipal Politics and the Struggle for Civil Rights in Montgomery, Birmingham, and Selma by J. Mills Thornton III, professor of history at the University of Michigan.

The work, to be published in November, has been eagerly anticipated as a history of the civil rights movement. Thornton thoroughly examines the crucial nexus of local power, ambition, obligation, and pressure that molded the civil rights movement and that was not well understood by the media at the time.
