Sept. 11 Commemorative Events, Activities to be Held

UA and University-related organizations are scheduling events and activities in remembrance of last year's terrorist attacks on New York's World Trade Center, Washington D.C.'s Pentagon, and the attempted attack foiled by passengers on the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. Events begin early and go through the evening.

7:45 a.m. -- A Service of Music, Prayers, and Remembrance at Canterbury Episcopal Chapel and Student Center, 812 5th Avenue, will include choirs from Christ Episcopal Church and St. Matthias Episcopal. Canterbury will continue services throughout the day. For information, contact Father Ken Fields at 345-9590.

9 a.m. -- The City of Tuscaloosa Commemoration Service and Dedication of Flags, the boat landing at Greensboro and River Road -- The service will include sounding distress sirens, ringing church bells, and a 21-gun salute. For information, contact the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama at 758-7588.

9 a.m. -- Blood Drive -- The SGA and United Blood Service, the sole provider to DCH, are co-sponsoring a student blood drive in the Ferguson Ballroom through the day. Donors will get a pizza coupon or T-shirt. For information, contact the SGA at 348-6127.

Noon -- The UA Quad -- The SGA and President's Office are planning a special event on the Quad. Details were being worked out at press time.

5 p.m. -- The Student Services Plaza -- The Campus Ministers Association is in the planning stages for a memorial service. Details will be forthcoming.

Dr. Mason to Address Faculty/Staff Meeting

UA Interim President Barry Mason is scheduled to address the annual fall faculty and staff meeting Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m. in Morgan Auditorium. A box lunch will follow on the Quad. Watch for details in Dialog and Dialog Extra about new items on the agenda. The announcement and introduction of the winners of the National Alumni Association's 2002-2003 Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award (OCTA) will be part of the meeting. The OCTA is one of the most prestigious faculty awards presented at the University. All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.
