Deadline for Submissions to 2002-03 UA Campus Directory Approaching
Bankhead Visiting Writers Series Kicks Off John Keeble, prose writer and holder of the Coal Royalty Chair in Creative Writing in UA's College of Arts and Sciences for the fall 2002 semester, and Hank Lazer, poet, English professor and assistant vice president for undergraduate programs in the Office for Academic Affairs, will kick off the 2002-03 Bankhead Visiting Writers Series Thursday, Aug. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in 205 Smith Hall. Keeble is the author of the definitive exploration of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, Out of the Channel. He has also written four novels, including Broken Ground. He is a Pulitzer Prize nominee for "Black Spring in Valdez," written for the Village Voice, and an Emmy nominee for the documentary film To Write and Keep Kind about the life of Raymond Carver. Lazer has published poetry in many of America's leading literary magazines and journals of experimental writing. He is the author of Doublespace: Poems 1971-1989, INTER(IR)RUPTIONS, a series of ten collage-poems, a fine press limited edition of Negation, a series of ten poems, and Days, another in the series-often poems, but these being short-lined and more lyrical. Dates for Fraternity and Sorority Rush Set In scheduling fraternity and sorority rush dates for 2002, the Office of the Dean of Students has made every effort not to conflict with the academic calendar of the University. A National Pan-Hellenic Council member organization convocation is scheduled for Wednesday evening, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. Rush for students interested in joining an Interfraternity Council member fraternity or a Panhellenic member sorority begins Thursday, Aug. 29, with a 6:30 p.m. and a 7 p.m. convocation respectively. Sorority Ice Water Teas will be held Sunday, Sept. 1, from noon-8 p.m. Sorority activities continue as follows: Philanthropy Day, Monday, Sept. 2 (Labor Day), noon-8 p.m.; Six Party round, Sunday, Sept. 8, 3-8:30 p.m.; Serious Night, Monday, Sept. 9, 8:30-11:30 p.m.; and Bid Day, Tuesday, Sept. 10, 4 p.m. Fraternities will hold open houses Monday, Sept. 2, from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., after which bids may be extended. An open dinner night will be held Wednesday, Sept. 4. Campus Drive Closing Temporarily Campus Drive near the Student Recreation Center will be closed temporarily for construction of a storm drainage system. At press time, this work was expected to begin on or about Aug. 16 and be concluded by Aug.26. Please seek alternate routes to campus during this time. UA Offers Campus-Wide Web Calendar Crimson Calendar, a University-wide events calendar, is on-line at the virtual address events.ua.edu. Sponsored and managed by the Office of Special Services and Volunteers in the Office of Advancement, the calendar welcomes entries from individuals, departments and divisions, which may be keyed in at the site. After going through a screening process, submissions will be displayed on the site. The site displays daily events and activities automatically on entering the page. It also gives the current weather; links to other sites of interest, including the UA museums, libraries and Arboretum; other calendars, including academic calendars, School of Music calendar and others; and other sites, including Dialog, of interest to faculty, staff, students and anyone interested in what’s happening on campus. Mary Jo Modica, UA Arboretum horticulturist, now writes a weekly gardening column for the Tuscaloosa News. Published each Monday, the column deals with practical, how-to gardening information aimed at novices and amateur gardeners with some experience. So far, the column has dealt with subjects as varied as worm gardening and crape myrtles. The Arboretum will hold its annual fall sale by catalog this year. Orders are due by Sept. 20 and pick-up will be Oct. 13. To get a catalog, call the Arboretum at 553-3278 or e-mail Modica at arbor@bama.ua.edu. The Arboretum is located at the eastern end of 15th Street (Veteran's Memorial Parkway) adjacent left to the Veteran's Administration Hospital grounds. University Libraries Announces ILLiad UA Libraries' new ILLiad software steers library patrons through the process of requesting and receiving materials through the interlibrary loan process. Users can request photocopies, books, book chapters, conference papers, patents, reports, standards documents and more at their desks. ILLiad provides more flexibility in managing ILL requests. By creating a username and password to log onto the system, users can track requests, edit personal information, cancel requests, view a request history and make renewal requests online. The new ILL form can be accessed through the University Libraries' Web site at http://www.lib.ua.edu. The 2002-03 officers of UA's Black Faculty and Staff Association are: President, Connie A. Diggs, J.D., assistant vice president for student affairs, and director of the Russell Student Health Center; Vice President, Carlton R. McHargh, director of recruitment and education programs in the College of Education; Secretary, Gwen Little, program assistant in the College of Continuing Studies' Office of Advancement and Community College Relations and dean's office secretary; Treasurer, Priscilla J. McWilliams, publicity assistant for The University of Alabama Press; and Past President, Samory Pruitt, assistant to the president for community and corporate relations. This is a crucial period for the organization, according to Diggs. The BFSA, which will work with the Healthy Campus 2010 initiative, will focus on four areas: student support and outreach; new membership and membership retention; recruitment, retention and promotion of black faculty and staff; and reviewing the committee structure.
