Sarah Moody Gallery of Art to Present Judy Pfaff’s "2-D: An Installation of Works on Paper"

UA’s Sarah Moody Gallery of Art in conjunction with the Farley Moody Galbraith Endowment will present its feature exhibition by New York artist Judy Pfaff, "2-D: An Installation of Works on Paper," from April 19-June 21. An opening night reception will be held on Friday, April 19, from 6-8 p.m. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Internationally acclaimed artist Judy Pfaff has been described as a "collagist in space." Since 1968, Pfaff has transformed more than 30 spaces with her elaborate installations of sculpture, prints and drawings, using an approach that is intuitive and immediate. Pfaff’s work can be found in prestigious collections such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Her awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art is located in 103 Garland Hall. Funding for this exhibition is provided by the Farley Moody Galbraith Endowment. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays, and 2-5 p.m. Sundays. Admission to the gallery is free. For more information about the gallery or exhibit, call 348-1890.

Dinoff Lecture Set

The annual Michael Dinoff Memorial Lecture is scheduled for Thursday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in room 208 Gordon Palmer Hall. This year’s guest lecturer is Dr. Thomas Borkovec, a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Penn State University. The lecture is sponsored by the UA department of psychology in memory of Dr. Michael Dinoff, who was director of UA’s Psychological Clinic and professor of psychology from 1963 until his death in 1982.

Borkovec, director of clinical training at Penn State, will speak on "Practice Research Networks: A True Integration of Clinical Science and Clinical Practice." Borkovec’s research and clinical practice focuses on adult anxiety disorders. His efforts to integrate basic research and clinical practice were recognized in 1998 by the American Psychological Association with the Distinguished Scientist Award.

UA to Host Rural Health Conference

UA will host the third annual Rural Health Conference April 25-26 at the Bryant Conference Center. Titled "The Time for Action: Building Connections to Improve Rural Economies and Health," the conference will address rural health care issues and their impact on the state of Alabama. It will bring together people from rural communities as well as leaders in health care, education, government, law enforcement, social work, churches and other areas.

Keynote speakers will be Dr. Marilyn Hughes Gaston, director of the Bureau of Primary Care and former assistant surgeon general, and Dr. Malcolm Portera, chancellor of The University of Alabama System. Continuing Education Unit certificates are available.

The registration fee, which includes conference materials, refreshment breaks, two continental breakfasts, a luncheon and evening refreshments, is $75. University Recreation to Host Wheels Across the Quad

University Recreation and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of West Alabama will host the second annual Wheels Across the Quad to promote awareness of services and programs of Big Brothers and Big Sisters. This year’s event will take place on the Quad on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission is free.

Activities will include a variety of fun race events, bike rodeo, car show, food vendors, a kiddie corral and the famous "Bama Bed Race." Beds will be supplied to five-person teams to compete in the bed race. Other races will include age-grouped bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, tricycles and wheelbarrows.

Enrollment Opens for Summer Arts Camp and Kindermusik

UA’s Community Music School has announced the opening of applications to the Summer Arts Camp of music, dance and art for children ages 5-10 and for Kindermusik Summer Camps, music classes for newborns and children to age 7 years. Enrollment in Arts Camp is limited to 16 in each area and in Kindermusic limited to eight children per class; enrollment in each is taken on a first come, first served basis.

Fulbright Offers Lecturing/Research Grants in 140 Countries

The Fulbright Scholar Program is offering lecturing/research awards in some 140 countries for the 2003-2004 academic year. Awards are available in 37 different disciplines and professional fields, as well as in a variety of subdisciplines such as gender studies and peace studies. Traditional Fulbright awards are available from two months to an academic year or longer. A new short-term grants program -- the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program -- offers two-to-six-week grants in a variety of disciplines and fields.

Application deadlines for 2003-2004 awards are:

  • May 1 for Fulbright Distinguished Chair awards in Europe, Canada and Russia
  • Aug. 1 for Fulbright traditional lecturing and research grants worldwide
  • Nov. 1 for the summer German Studies Seminar and for spring/summer seminars in Germany, Korea and Japan for academic and international education administrators
  • Fulbright Senior Specialists Program -- rolling deadline
