Coley Joins UA Office of Counsel

Darnell D. Coley

Darnell D. Coley has joined the Office of Counsel at The University of Alabama, and will hold a position as staff counsel. Coley is a magna cum laude graduate of Tuskegee University and received her J.D. degree from the UA School of Law in 1996. Following law school, Coley served as a law clerk to Judge Sue Bell Cobb of the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals. Before joining UA, Coley was a partner in the Birmingham office of the law firm of Thomas, Means, Gillis & Seay, practicing primarily in the areas of labor and employment law and education law.

University Relations Offices Win Awards

The University Relations offices of marketing communications and broadcast media and marketing won several awards in the annual awards competition sponsored by District III of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). CASE is a national association of college and university public relations, advancement and alumni affairs professionals. UA’s Jan Pruitt Duvall, associate director of university relations and director of marketing communications, is the current president of CASE District III.

Cover of CD: The University of Alabama, Welcome to the FamilyThe Office of Marketing Communications won an Award of Special Merit for newsletter publishing improvement for the Capstone International Newsletter (in collaboration with Capstone International Center); and an Award of Special Merit for slide and multimedia programs for the Undergraduate Orientation CD (in collaboration with Undergraduate Admissions). The awards also recognized art designers Laura Lineberry and David Jones.

Screenshot from tv commercial: Dream a LittleThe Office of Broadcast Media and Marketing, led by director Tom Stipe, won an Award of Excellence for the "Dream a Little" television spot in the television category. (For a description of this spot that ran on nationally broadcast sports events, see the Dec. 10, 2001, issue of Dialog, on the Web at dialog.ua.edu.) The office also won an Award of Excellence for "Bama Babes FIRST Lego League," an entry in the video news release category; and a Special Merit Award for "Cadaver Sniffing Dog," also in the video news release category. The awards also recognized staff members Bill McDaniel and Chandra Clark.

Bacon Heads Ferguson Operations

Carl L. Bacon

Carl L. Bacon, who has served in student affairs at UA for 10 years, has been named director of union facilities. As director, Bacon is responsible for coordinating the entire operation of Ferguson Center.

Prior to this appointment, Bacon served as associate director of union facilities for four years, dealing mainly with the technical aspects of Ferguson including computer hardware/software management. Bacon previously served in various positions within the Office of Dean of Students, including the overseeing the computerized voting system for student elections and serving as advisor to several student organizations including the African-American Association, Pan-Greek Association, and Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges. Bacon joined the UA staff in 1992 as associate director of broadcast services with the Center for Communication and Educational Technology (CCET). Bacon earned a B.A. in mathematics from Florida State University in 1982.

The Art of Biography Series Continues

Brochure cover: The Art of BiographyThe Bankhead History Lecture Series will present its third lecture of The Art of Biography series Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in Ferguson Theater. Dr. Dan Carter, Educational Foundation Professor at the University of South Carolina, will present "George C. Wallace and the Art of Biography." The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will follow. For more information, contact Dr. David Beito at 348-1870.

Carter is the author and editor of more than 40 articles and a half dozen books including "The Politics of Rage: George Wallace, the Origins of the New Conservatism and the Transformation of American Politics" (1995) and "From George Wallace to Newt Gingrich: Race in the Conservative Counterrevolution, 1963-1994" (1996). He collaborated with film producers Paul Stekler and Dan McCabe in the production of "Settin’ the Woods on Fire: George Wallace and the Politics of the ‘60s," a documentary based upon a biography of Wallace and broadcast on PBS’s "The American Experience." Carter is currently an advisor on a number of films including one on Jimmy Carter and is at work on a study of right-wing anti-government extremism in America.
