Sessions are offered every Monday.

Three ways to register and to check out training manual:

Human Resources Development training sessions will be conducted at G54 Rose Administration building unless otherwise stated. Persons with special needs should contact Margie Karrh.

The Training Resource Center (TRC) offers videos for a staff development "lunch and learn" program. The TRC accommodates six to eight people.

Benefits Review

Investing in Your Retirement Future: Annuities

What Is a Tax-Sheltered Annuity?

A tax-sheltered annuity offers employees an opportunity to invest in their retirement by contributing to funds through pre-tax payroll deductions. These programs offer the choice of investing contributions in fixed annuities or variable annuities. You decide how to allocate your funds among investment choices. The University of Alabama offers eligible employees the choice of two major companies: TIAA-CREF or VALIC.

Who Can Participate?

You may participate if you are a biweekly paid employee or a monthly paid employee.

Who Qualifies for Matching Contributions?

Eligibility for matching is limited to regular full-time monthly paid employees.

The University of Alabama matches the individual’s TIAA-CREF contribution up to 5% of gross monthly pay not to exceed $170,000 annual salary. VALIC contributions are not eligible for this match.

Can I Access My Funds?

Federal pension and tax laws such as early-withdrawal restrictions and penalties can restrict accessibility to your funds. However, with TIAA-CREF and VALIC you can get information, make allocation choices and execute transfers over the Internet, by telephone and by mail. There is a wide range of income choices such as lifetime annuities and systematic withdrawals. You can also move funds among other investment choices.

How Do I Get Started?

Contact the Benefits Office for a TIAA-CREF Enrollment Application Kit. Contact the local VALIC representative at 1-800-448-2542.

Read over the information to decide how you want your premiums to be divided among the investment options.

Designate a beneficiary to receive your vested benefits should you die before starting your retirement income.

Return your completed forms to the Benefits Office. It’s that easy!

For more information, contact the Benefits Office at 348-7117, or access the Web site at http://bama.ua.edu/~hr/benefits. You may also contact TIAA-CREF at 1-800-842-2776 or VALIC at 1-800-448-2542.

Payroll Reminder

The payroll office reminds UA faculty and staff who claim exemption from federal and/or state income taxes that it is time to renew exemptions. The deadline is Feb. 18. If the exemption claim is not renewed by the deadline, the University is required to withhold taxes based on being single and claiming zero withholding allowances from any pay received after that date. To renew your exempt status, go to the payroll office in 330 Rose Administration Building to complete new W-4 forms for federal and/or state withholding taxes. For more information, contact the payroll office at 348-5221.
