TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Center for Service and Leadership launches the 22nd annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive with a kickoff event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, at UA’s Ferguson Plaza.

The food drive, which benefits the West Alabama Food Bank, runs through Friday, Nov. 20.

The kickoff includes free buttons, T-shirts, food and drinks. Participants may buy raffle tickets for a hat signed by Nick Saban and a softball signed by Patrick Murphy. All proceeds go to the West Alabama Food Bank. Winners will be drawn at the end of the week.

Started in 1994, Beat Auburn Beat Hunger has helped collect more than 2 million pounds of food. During the weeks leading up to the Iron Bowl on Nov. 28, students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members “fight” hunger and poverty in West Alabama by challenging Auburn University and the Food Bank of East Alabama to see who can collect more nonperishable food to help needy Alabama families.

The West Alabama Food Bank is accepting all nonperishable food items. Collection barrels will be at locations on campus and around Tuscaloosa. Monetary donations will be accepted at Bama Dining locations and online at www.westalabamafoodbank.org.
