BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP PROJECTS — UA employees can register to participate in two projects that will have a positive impact on both the communities of Miami, Fla., and Tuscaloosa prior to the Discover BCS National Championship football game between UA and Notre Dame. Faculty, staff, students and alumni from the two universities will work together with Roots in the City on an urban gardening project to promote community development and beautification in inner-city areas of Miami. The service project will be Sunday, Jan. 6, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., with check-in and lunch beginning at noon.

In addition, UA employees who will be in Tuscaloosa on Monday, Jan. 7, can participate in a local National Championship Service Project from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Check-in will be at 8:30 a.m. in the Ferguson Center Plaza. Volunteers will work with Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority and the Tuscaloosa Volunteer Reception Center. For more information, contact Wahnee Sherman at 348-5722 or

REQUESTS FOR CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION WORK — UA Facilities has announced that campus deans, directors and department heads have until Jan. 11 to submit project initiation request forms for construction or renovation work to be completed during the spring break. The deadline allows time for estimate preparation and workforce scheduling. Any requests submitted past the deadline will not be considered for scheduling and will be accommodated as soon as possible. Visit to access the request form.

NOMINATIONS FOR PEER LEADERS — First Year Experience, an area of the Division of Student Affairs, is asking UA faculty and staff to nominate students for the Peer Leaders program. Students chosen to be Peer Leaders serve as role models and mentors to first-year students while helping them make a smooth social and academic transition to the Capstone. Peer Leaders partner with faculty members to contribute to the instruction of courses for first-year students. To nominate students for Peer Leaders, send an email with the following information to by Jan. 22: nominator’s name and email address; nominees’ names and email addresses; and any additional information about the nominees that may enhance their selection as Peer Leaders.
