ANNOUNCEMENTS

COMPUTER SCAM — The Office of Information Technology reports that a user recently received a call from an individual claiming to work for the IT Service Desk. The caller requested access to the user’s computer to correct a problem and then took control of the computer, thus preventing the user from logging back in. OIT warns employees to verify the identity of any caller purporting to be an OIT representative by requesting a callback number or name. If the caller refuses to provide the information or provides a number that does not begin with 348, hang up. If the caller provides a name, look the name up in the faculty and staff directory and call the person back at the listed number. Normally, OIT support personnel have tools that allow them to remote into a system and correct a problem without requiring a computer user’s credentials. For more information regarding this matter, contact the IT Service Desk at 348-5555.

UA FLU-VACCINATION CAMPAIGN — A month-long campaign to vaccinate UA employees and students against the flu this year will begin Sept. 4. University Medical Center nurses will administer the shots at various times at buildings and offices across campus. Toward the end of September, tents will be set up on the Quad and in faculty and staff parking lots, and flu shots will be offered before and after work hours. A schedule listing vaccination sites, times and dates will be announced closer to the start of the campaign and will be included on the UA calendar of events found online at http://events.ua.edu/events. Flu shots also will be offered at University Medical Center’s Faculty-Staff Clinic, at WellBama sites and at the UA Employee Health Fair in October while supplies last. The vaccinations will be in injection form and are free. The University has purchased enough vaccinations for 8,000 people. In early October, nurses from the Student Health Center will be available at the Ferguson Center and will visit University dormitories to provide flu shots to students. More information is available at http://cchs.ua.edu.

WORTH QUOTING — “Typically they do it to attract attention, sympathy and concern they feel they are unable to get in any other way,” Dr. Marc D. Feldman, clinical professor of psychiatry and adjunct professor of psychology, as quoted in The Times Free Press (Chattanooga) on the subject of people who feign and, in some cases, actually self-induce illnesses.
