ANNOUNCEMENTS
TEST OF EMERGENCY SYSTEMS AUG. 1 — The University will test UA Alerts and the emergency public address system at 11:55 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug 1. The test will last approximately 30 seconds and should not be disruptive. Immediately following at noon, the Tuscaloosa Emergency Management Agency will test the outdoor tornado sirens. Building managers should contact AV Solutions at 348-6011 or avsolutions@ua.edu to report any problems with the PA system or if they do not hear the announcement in their buildings.
Faculty and staff should update their contact information on myBama to ensure they receive the UA Alerts messages. People who currently receive the alerts but would prefer to be contacted differently will need to revise their contact information. To view and make changes to their information online, faculty and staff can click here.
REGISTRATION OF WIRELESS DEVICES — The Office of Information Technology announces that registration of wireless devices will begin Wednesday, Aug. 1. When users attempt to connect to UA Public Wireless or UA ResNet Wireless for the first time, they will be redirected to UA’s Device Registration Page. Following this redirection will be a page that will load a secure client onto the device so that the user can connect to UA’s secure wireless network, or UA-WPA2.
UA Public Wireless and UA ResNet will only be available until Sept. 1, at which time the networks will be removed. This will allow all UA wireless users to maintain a secure wireless connection using UA-WPA2.
TRANSITION TO BLACKBOARD LEARN DEADLINE AUG. 3 — The University is moving from eLearning to Blackboard Learn this year. In order to reuse any course content from the eLearning system, instructors must request that their course materials be migrated. The deadline to request migrated content for Fall Semester 2012 is Friday, Aug. 3, at 5 p.m. Requests received after the deadline cannot be guaranteed to be ready for fall. Visit http://frc.ua.edu and click on Blackboard Learn Transition to learn more about Blackboard Learn and the transition, including requesting content migration from eLearning, creating and combining Banner-integrated Fall 2012 Blackboard Learn courses, saving student data out of eLearning and viewing a side-by-side comparison of the old and new systems. For more information, send an email to blackboard.learn@ua.edu or call 348-3532.
SUMMER COMMENCEMENT AUG. 4 — UA will hold commencement Saturday, Aug. 4, at 9 a.m. in Coleman Coliseum to award degrees to its summer graduates. The ceremony will be broadcast live over the Internet. The webcast will be archived on UA’s website, http://www.ua.edu/commencement, and will be available for viewing through May 2012. Reruns of the ceremony will be broadcast on local channel WOTM-19 from Aug. 11 to Aug. 18.

BAN OF TEXTING WHILE DRIVING — UA’s Office of Risk Management reminds operators of vehicles owned, leased or rented by the University that Alabama House Bill 2 goes into effect Wednesday, Aug. 1. HB 2 prohibits the use of a wireless device to write, send or read a text message, instant message or email while operating a motor vehicle. UA’s Driver Safety and Vehicle Management Program requires drivers to comply with all traffic laws, including HB 2, while operating a vehicle owned, leased or rented by the University.

WORTH QUOTING — “It’s all about timing, when your child connects the dots and understands that if they want something, they can barter.” Jan Brakefield, UA assistant professor of consumer sciences, as quoted in The Tuscaloosa News on the importance of teaching spending and savings habits to children. Brakefield said a good time to start the teaching process is when the child reaches the age of 2 or 3.
